Cousin lives in TX. She was saying she figured out a way to get free car insurance for her and her husband.
She put her husbands two brothers on her policy, and they each pay half. One brother is 19, one is 26 or so. One brother does live with them, the other doesn't but he got his license and car registration listed like he does. Would this be questioned if there's an accident?
Can you really just add anyone to your policy? I always thought it had to be your child or spouse.

Actually, I think some insurance companies require all licensed household members to be insured under the policy, or show proof of other insurance. Household members defined

So if brother 2 has a license/registration at their address, if they DIDN'T add him, they might have to submit proof of other insurance to their company.

My husband had to deal with this with my in-laws' insurance after he moved, because his license/registration was still at his folks' house. (Yes, I know that was a child, not brother, but we were told at the time that all licensed drivers at that address had to be carried under their policy.) This was several years ago, but I don't think it's changed.

I'm assuming that the policy still lists her and her husband, they just aren't paying for it as brothers pay the bill? As others have said, if the brothers get in a wreck, it might affect her and hubby's future insurance rates.

I think it will depend, when I moved last week I still had my truck listed at my parents address on the insurance. I added a renters insurance plan through them and it jumped like $30 a month for my truck, turns out I lost the multi car discount because they knew I no longer lived at that address. I wouldn't risk it, they'll find out and deny the frick out your claim for any reason

Ever heard the phrase "Don't mess with Texas"? They have instituted strict insurance reforms that include, among other things, severe punishment for insurance fraud. I would not play around with this. You should consult a Texas attorney.

Insurance is on the car, not the family members. The policy will list a primary driver. As long as that person is the primary driver and they haven't lied, then no problem. Anybody can drive the car and the car is covered, unless the person is driving the vehicle without permission (I.E. stolen).

Your cousin is shitty for making her brothers pay for the policy of the car. And her brothers are idiots for paying the insurance on a car driven by 4, but splitting payments in 2.

God forbid insurance companies stick it to us. Worse than used car salesmen.

I told her it didn't sound right to me. Not worth the risk IMO. I wouldn't feel comfortable adding spouse's siblings to my policy. They aren't the best drivers though so maybe that's part of it.

If the insurance is not in her name (i.e. named on the policy), technically it is fine, as everyone has permission to use the car.

However, when her scheme is done and the brothers begin driving their own vehicles, when she goes to get insurance, her rates will jump because it shows a "lapse" as she was not a named driver.

I just dealt with a similar situation recently, as a grandfather had not listed his granddaughter on his policy so as to save them $10/month. Well, when his granddaughter moved out, it showed a year+ lapse on her insurance, so her insurance jumped over $30/month. She will be rated for that lapse for several more month to several more years depending on the company she is insured through.

Personal auto coverage applies to you and your, which includes immediate family members as long as they are living in the household. However, if they are the principle operator they need to be listed as a driver in the household. It sounds like she is insuring their car under her name because they have shitty driving records
