The former head of New York City’s massive police patrol division is set to join Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration, in a move aimed at shoring up an embattled, shrinking police force.

Fausto Pichardo, who rose to become the second-highest ranking officer in the New York Police Department before he resigned abruptly in 2020, will act as a "consulting Chief of Operations," Superintendent Shaun Ferguson told officers in an e-mail Wednesday.

Ferguson wrote that Pichardo is one of two former New York Police Department chiefs who have recently conducted a “rapid 10-day assessment” of the beleaguered New Orleans force.

Ferguson told staff that Pichardo, 45, will stay on for “as long as six months” to roll out their recommendations and train a permanent replacement.

The unusual arrangement marks Cantrell’s latest response to soaring crime, emergency response times and public rancor aimed at City Hall, with a nascent mayoral recall campaign now underway.

Among his tasks, Pichardo “will begin working with us today to ascertain exactly where our full-duty cops are and how they might soon be reorganized," Ferguson wrote.

Only took an actual recall to get Latoya off her arse in Switzerland and doing something here.

Love to see her squirming and having to make moves she denied were issues.

good, she's getting nervous.

too little too late tho Destroya. Should've thought of this instead of jet setting on pointless trips to "sister cities" that are nothing like the shithole you've turned Nola into.

What's the point of revamping the police if she is just going to show up in court and let them walk.

She def is. I saw a video today of her campaigning to S&WB employees begging them to have her back.

She thought this would be a push only from Lakeview and uptown. She over estimated her popularity.

I'm glad they are bringing in help but that's really bad if the Police Chief can't determine where to focus his on shift patrol units.

These were her Tweets today

Today I visited the hard working employees of Sewerage and Water Board New Orleans.????
I’m continuing to embed myself into City agencies in order to meet with and hear from city employees, directly.

quote:

The goal is to succeed in making this the model utility that we all know it can be and my administration is enacting measures to retain our dedicated and hard-working employees

quote:

The pay increases have been approved by the Civil Service Commission! ????

Next, my administration will present it to the City Council for final approval…

I bet as soon as the video cut out, she threatened their jobs if they sign the petition.

All these stories and no one still has yet to come out call out poor black communities and hold them accountable for most of the issues.

Before anyone gets their panties in wad, I said most, not all.
