But you should pre-pay your own services whether in a home or not.

that's what I was getting at, could be separate from the home, does the spouse have PoA?, if so, she can easily find out, or the funeral home used for her spouse might, be able to help if approached the right way

Your wife is a horrible, horrible person. Did her mom murder your wife's late husband or children or anything? If not, then your wife is a horrible, horrible person with a black heart.

the state takes and cremates them
That's what I figured. Does the state bill their estate? I would imagine they do. I guess that would also require the state to open succession with a state employee attorney.

This is mostly for humor... relax. Her mom was/is pure evil however. We would nor could ever do this, I'm just talking shite really.

Donate the body to science...that doesn't cost anything I think

Pretty sure the person (when living) would have had to agree to that.

yes, I had to make funeral arrangements for a friend a few years ago, he died young, "healthy," and unprepared, became very well versed in the process

Can you explain the process. So you just pay a fee online and they deal with the hospital/funeral home etc?

there is a fee to pick up the body, then for the cremation,(I got the impression that is was kind of like expedia, i.e., the funeral homes had the site, just trying to keep the facilities paid for, because who else would have a crematorium?) plus, and this is a biggie, you need to buy death certificates, at least 10, to deal with debt collectors, closing bank accts., etc.
