Can you cover an outdoor home HVAC unit for aesthetic purposes?

Looking to cover ours in our backyard as best I can...I assume you can't put a top portion on it, but I wanted to confirm. Was wondering if you can put a top on it or if that would restrict airflow or create some sort of hazard?
Was thinking something like this:
ETA:
I've never owned a home before, so I am sorry if its a stupid question. I googled it first and surprisingly there are a ton of morons saying its ok online
I'll probably just build something like this instead:

That can't be a good idea.

No, that's a horrible udea. The outside unit has to breathe. Just build a lattice around it but it needs room to get air and don't put a top on it

Hell no
Use some lattice work or something.

Have you ever stood near one when it was running?

Can't imagine why nobody else thought of this

That looks to be covering pool equipment.

You can put a decorative fence around it I guess. Nothing on top though

Just hose it down with expanding foam insulation before you put that cover over it. You won't see it of have to hear it. Your HVAC guy will appreciate you too...

I know I know I know
I thought maybe it would be ok if I didn't put a lot of cover on the top, just a few cross beams or open lattice.
I won't do it...thanks OT

Sure you can. Let us know how it works out

I don't know anything about these things. Just purchased our first home.
Thanks for the serious responses
But I assume I can put a very porous side wall around it and just nothing on top?

We planted bushes to cover ours up from view.

Lattice work. What u live in a trailer ?
Posted on 3/5/16 at 6:13 pm to TheCaterpillar
they have to move a hell of a lot of air, so anything that interferes with that will cost you efficiency. something like the second picture probably would be ok, but don't cover the top and be sure to leave a side or two completely open...and don't put anything too close on any side of it.

Yeah I definitely live in a trailer
I'm just trying to get some ideas here man. Never owned a home before and this HVAC is directly beside the back porch.
Stop being such a douche.

Thank you.
All I needed.
Rest of you can blow me.

Plant some shrubs a few feet from the unit so that they grow into a perimeter. Leave yourself access against the house for maintenance.
