Sometimes downvotes happen BY accident.

Sometimes people downvote thingS because their perspective is different than yours for why they are downvoting it.

Sometimes people will upvote a thread on a sad topic because they are showing support, but maybe someone is downvoting as a way to say "thats sad" or "i dont like that this happened to you"

eta: Consider the perspective that 111 people upvoted or liked a thread stating that coastie passed away. 8 people downvoted or said they didnt like it. I've always understood that upvoting or liking stuff like that is a sign of support, but I've always found it funny that you are liking a bad event. So I could imagine there are a few folks (probably many who are less internet experienced) who are disliking the OP because they do not like that coastie passed.

1 downvote can erase 25 upvotes. I realty don't care just in that thread it pissed me off. I rarely downvote without also replying.
