Friend of mine telling me his 7th grader who is a really good athlete is being offered a full scholarship to private school in NOLA area. (St Martin's to be exact). If this is still against the rules like in the past maybe he shouldn't be openly telling people about it....

What's the deal nowadays?

IDK if it's against the rules or not but schools have been doing it forever.

All I'm saying is, the private school I went to gave discounted tuition to some really fast poor people.

I'm aware of that. Just wondering if it's no longer against the rules of LHSAA or whoever.

I know of a few myself, and probably most schools do it I would bet.

I'm asking if it's against LHSAA rules to recruit athletes by giving free tuition.

Years ago a friend told me one way around it was, if you had a sibling, they gave them free tuition and, on paper, the targeted athlete's was paid.

Yes, it's illegal

Recruitment of students or attempted recruiting of students for athletic purposes, regardless of their residence, is a
gross violation of the spirit and philosophy of these By-Laws and is expressly prohibited.
2.1.2 “Athletic recruiting” is defined as the use of undue influence and/or special inducement by anyone connected
directly or indirectly with an LHSAA school in an attempt to encourage, induce, pressure, urge or entice a
prospective student of any age to transfer to or retain a student at a school for the purpose of participating in
interscholastic athletics.

2.1.3 Recruiting for athletic purposes is not only a violation by the student who has been recruited, but is also a violation
by the school and/or the school personnel who recruited the student. It is a violation to recruit for athletic purposes
regardless of a student’s age or grade level. If proof is established that a school has secured and athlete under any
of the conditions set forth in this section, the principal shall be required to appear before the Executive Committee
and the Executive Director to answer the allegations against his/her school and the student(s) is automatically
ineligible to participate in athletics for at least one calendar year and may be ruled ineligible in the sports(s) not to
exceed four calendar years.

2.1.4 It shall be a violation of this rule for a student-athlete to receive or be offered remuneration or special inducement
of any kind that is not made available to all applicants who apply to or enroll in the school.

I know it used to be against the rules, but it was almost impossible to prove it. It has gone on since way before I was in high school (more than 30 years ago). If there still is a rule against it, it is about as useless as having a rule against thinking.
