What a California lawmaker intended as a benign resolution honoring a late, world-renowned movie icon exploded into an emotional debate over decades-old racist comments. The state Assembly defeated the official ode to John Wayne Thursday after several legislators described statements he made about racial minorities and his support for the anti-communist House Un-American Activities Committee and John Birch Society.

quote:

Alejo cited a 1971 interview with Playboy in which Wayne talked disparagingly about blacks. "I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people," he told the magazine (https://bit.ly/1SwJCDa .)

California is a racist word.

We need to change the name of that state to "The diversified state of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr"

I think there should be a "Hate Day" to fight PC movement. It's ok to have a little hate inside you.

I mean...I enjoy the Duke as an actor and all, but that's um...some pretty rough shite to defend right there.

Good news is, you've come to the right place for it...so this ought to be fun!

Does social context mean anything to anyone today?

His point (if you've read the complete interview) has been made by some black writers over the years.

Black businesses, for example, had been protected from competition by segregation/discrimination. Once the Civil Rights law passed, the black small business community was decimated because they weren't read to compete.

Wayne argued (as have some black writers) that desegregation would have been far more successful had there been some preparation, rather than a "cold turkey" change.

In what social context in 1971 do you think this made sense?

Social context? It was 1971, not 1871

He said this in 1971, post civil rights era... This was not in 1932. There was a black Supreme Court Justice and black congressmen by this point. Pretty inexcusable, and I'm far from a liberal pc person.

Social context or just context are unacceptable in today's world.

I mean of all the passive non-sense they label as racist these days, this one is actually rooted in something legitimate. He did flat out say something that by today's standards is quite racist. But is it really surprising that a white guy born in 1907 said something like this 5 years or so after the peak of the civil rights movement. Like with slave owners of the past, I find it difficult to apply today's standards and norms to people of the past. Nobody batted an eye at this quote in 1971.

That's fine if you don't paint an entire race with that brush.

Good thing black people never say anything racist, or nothing in this country would have a name.

I have a friend(white guy) that attends one of those huge black mega churches, probably because they let him sing, but I've gone with him a couple of times. Some of the things that come from that preachers mouth are pretty "racy," to say the least. No protests, or calls for his resignation, nada.
