I don't really mind this. Bees are essential for agriculture.

No bees, no food.

Yeah, bees are important, so I don't see this as a waste at all. They're disappearing at a rapid rate.

While it sounds "silly", I am sure the results of this study could have an impact on other areas.

I don't know if this is possible, but its just an example. Maybe there is something they can learn from the bees that pertains to change in weather or if there is something specific that causes bees to do something that causes them to produce a certain chemical in their honey that makes people more horny...

I don't know about their study but it put a lot of stress on me when LSU beat the crap out of Georgia Tech two different times in the Peach Bowl.

I expect this to get down voted by people who don't realize how vital bees are for pollination. All they'll see is scientists getting money and that's enough to piss them off.

They are extremely important. That's what articles like this fail to mention.. Because that would make too much sense, people just like to hear that people are getting money to watch a bunch of bees.

I know LSU has been into this for a long time. In the early 90's I was present at a demo out at the old LSU shooting range off of River Road. A manufacturer was demonstrating a product line of new riot control agents and smoke grenades. We were shooting a bunch of rounds from 37 and 40 MM grenade launchers into the back berm and many of them would skip and go over the berm. Unbeknownst to anyone present, the backside of the berm was home to the LSU bee research hives. We later learned several million bees were killed that day by the various chemical agents. There was some pretty stuff fallout to the LSU people who set up the demo event.

I hope not. We spending millions of dollars to establish "diversity departments" in colleges. At least some good could come from this.

My wife is a beekeeper and the importance of keeping healthy hives is incredible. The bee population has been decimated over the last 20-30 years and the backyard beekeeper is helping tremendously. She will harvest probably 45 gallons about the last week of July.
