Buying a new car from out of state, who's done it?

Group of acquaintances were all saying they buy their cars out of state because pricing is much better. This has nothing to do with taxes or trying to avoid paying full tax, they're talking about the sales price of the vehicle. They attributed the lower prices basically to inventory and that LA dealerships generally don't have the volume that larger out of state dealerships have.

Me, several times.

However, my last purchase I had a local dealer that beat the out of state price and gave me more on trade in. The internet has really leveled the playing field for car buying. You just need to find a high volume dealer in your area.

Bought our car out of state. Was a breeze. Negotiated everything online and went and picked it up.

Bought my 4runner in Dallas. Better price by far than any local dealer I spoke to. Found the dealership on eBay

Have done it several times. Get someone reputable to inspect the car before you buy it obviously. The recent car I bought is just a newer version of what my wife (no pics)was already driving so I bought it sight unseen once I confirmed it was mechanically sound. But I would go and check it out first in general. Shipping from Texas is only about $400 but that is negotiable as well.

Yes. I don't want to lump all midsize dealers together, but many in my area just don't give a damn because so many boomers and geriatrics still walk in off the street and demand to pay MSRP and not a dollar more!

I bought my last car from an individual in Florence, Alabama. I financed through Regions, which has offices here and there and everything went smoothly. Any dealer these days has enough experience to make it seamless - finding a banker who gets all the ducks in a row is trickier.

How did you get a formal price from the out of state dealer, did you go there in person? If not, what did they give you that allowed you to show the local guy the price he needed to beat?

Well, when I purchased it, it had to be shipped to the dealership directly from the manufacturer. So I bought the car from out of state.

Don't ask a general question if you can't handle generalized answers.

I didn't discuss the trade until after we had price on the new vehicle. Local dealer offered more without knowing what the out of state offer was.

I just did it. Pricing was no different. I still pay Tennessee taxes.

Just did this. I got a slightly better deal by purchasing from a Gulfport dealer over Nola dealers.

It was kind of a pain in the arse when i as to actually go to the dmv to get my plates instead of them just mailing them

That’s right.

As far as I can tell it’s not so much the state where you buy the car that matters, it’s more about the specific dealer you choose. Now some states are more friendly with car dealerships when it comes to their taxes and fees, but ultimately you can still see a lot of variation when it comes to dealer pricing within a state.
