Whatever happened to the development of Government Street? All I see is overgrown grass, traffic congestion, and some quick cash shops. Within the next 10 years it will be the new Florida Boulevard
Outsiders who don't live along government cried because they'd have had to take a different route to avoid traffic.
The people who live along that corridor are fully behind the plan.

can get more airline service to BTR
How will that help her voting base exactly?

Choking down a major surface street to 2 lanes is a stupid fricking idea

We should invite The First 48 to film in BR and use the money generated from the show to fix infrastructure.
You'd probably increase murders because idiots wanted to be on tv

Why is govt past the interstate a major surface street? So people can dead end at the park? And have to go through neighborhoods just to get on Florida a little further?
Use North. That's why it was redone.

Baton Rouge needs dramatic change to keep pace with global landscape
LINK
Baton Rouge needs to undergo a dramatic transformation to attract young people and avoid falling victim to a rapidly changing global landscape.
Well, what happened to this from less than a year ago?
quote:
In a global economy and battle for attracting talent, we have to realize that Baton Rouge’s competition is not the region or state, but the entire nation. We can’t be parochial or think “small town,” because we aren’t anymore. We must be innovative and “think big,” or our children and grandchildren may have even larger issues to face. That is not a legacy we desire.
This is an important election. Baton Rouge is my hometown and I have lived here all my life. This community has been very kind to my family, and I love our capital city. I know Sen. Bodi White and Sen. Sharon Weston Broome, and they are both good people with a heart to serve. I have met with each, watched the debates and read their responses to the Baton Rouge Area Chamber questionnaire. It seems that on many of the issues, the candidates are in agreement on what needs to be done. So which will be the better listener and be more effective with the Metro Council and residents north and south? Who is the right choice at this time in history to unite our parish and move our city-parish forward? I thought about this long and hard. There are never any guarantees, and as they say, “The proof is always in the pudding.”
I concluded that Weston Broome is the servant-leader who can be the best mayor-president for our community and future.

They've studied the route and think that a two lane road with a center turn lane wouldn't cause traffic tie ups. The bike lanes and street parking would help create a safer environment for pedestrians and reduce the need for surface parking lots and make mid city area more desirable for private investment.
This is a good plan. Other cities have done similar things and have seen positive outcomes.
If it bothers you that much, you have alternative routes.
Take Florida or North Blvd. The city has been angling to add turn lanes and widen parts of both of those streets anyways.
The only issue with that is the mayor is opting for property taxes to fund it instead of extending a sales tax for another 10 years.

Louisiana and BTR are a lost cause. There is no saving it. There's only measures that can be taken to slow the decline.

If you are a white collar career type that is in a profession where you can move, it is retarded to still be in Louisiana under the age of 32. The infrastructure is shite, race relations are falling apart, tax rates are skyrocketing, and you cannot trust these politicians to not rob you blind.

Lobdell and East Airport are the same as Foster, which is where North Blvd dead ends into

If you can find a job locally, go for it. A big problem is that so many of the best career paths take people out of state - particularly to Houston and Dallas.
Baton Rouge needs to focus on redeveloping areas that did not flood. TIF incentives, infrastructure investment, and public safety improvements are critical to enhance those areas. They've had success in downtown, but now need to expand out from there.

About the only thing that could "positively impact" North BR is a MOAB.

I actually think there are some areas in north Baton Rouge that have realistic potential to become middle class black neighborhoods again (as opposed to a war zone) with focused tax incentives targeting private development in conjunction with minor infrastructure enhancements.
They shouldn't go balls out with it though. They have to start small in areas near employment centers, such as the areas around downtown, the airport, or southern University.
I know that isn't a popular opinion, but real improvement of some areas of north Baton Rouge would go a long way to increasing the desirability of the region as a whole. North Baton Rouge has a fully developed street grid and most of it is on high ground.

The people of Louisiana have no reason to trust their state government to be good stewards when it comes to how and where their tax dollars are spent. They don't support infrastructure investment that they actually need because they don't trust that it will actually be spent wisely.
this. And it cannot be said often enough. I oppose every tax increase proposed because I have zip, zero, nada, NO confidence the money will be used correctly or even for its intended purpose.

To me change doesn't equal robbing its citizens of their hard earned money. The answer to every problem shouldn't be more taxes. It will just run good people and business off. Give them reason to come and stay.

The problem is that it's an increasingly hard sell in this state. Decades of massive corruption and misuse of public monies have made productive citizens jaded to the prospect of another tax hike.
