Copy, would have been my brothers/sisters from Minot operating out of RAF Fairford, UK. I was operating out of Diego Garcia and we were used pretty extensively in the southern portions of Iraq.

Rgr. Those crews were awesome. We were short on CAS platforms in the North, so we had to rely on some non-traditional platforms for CAS-type missions (B52s, B1s, etc). The 52's in particular were incredible, very flexible, and incredibly lethal - got us and our lightly-armed Kurdish partners through an Iraqi Armored Division with Republican Guard reinforcements in a matter of days....

That's only grown with the integration of advanced targeting pods giving us the ability to lase our own LGBs and also derive our own coordinates for JDAMs and adding the GBU-38 500 lb JDAM to our arsenal. We also just fielded an upgrade to be able to put JDAMs in our bomb bay versus just on the wings and ability to use the GBU-54 Laser JDAM.

Several reasons:

1) Can't get the same weapons effects
2) AC-130 is a very limited fleet and mostly support Special Ops only
3) AC-130s only operate at night due to their slow speed and vulnerability to MANPADs

There are more reasons, but those are just a few off the top of my head.

What altitude do they operate at? I assumed ISIS had pretty nonexistent anti-aircraft capabilities outside of light triple A.

I suppose range could be an issue as well.

Just seems like against low tech enemies like ISIS, Taliban, etc. we can spare some costs where applicable instead of flying B-52's to drop a couple smart munitions. And of course I want to see videos of air artillery blasting buildings.

AC-130s typically operate in the 15-20K foot regime. Of course they can operate outside of that, but that's their sweet spot.

MANPADs are very prevalent and some can reach into the mid-20K foot range.

Like I said before, they are dropping more than just a couple. This is just the only video that's been declassified so far.

. Those expectations are also too high for what a single aircraft can do

Well yeah now that the hippies are in charge. We used to be able to blow up mountains.

I was thinking today when I saw that we were using B-52's with guided munitions, why not just use some AC-130's with 105's? Seems like it would be cost efficient for use against ISIS.

The on-station time of the buff is what really makes it vital, it's cheap, carries tons of stuff (JDAM/CALCMs/lasers/cameras), too high to be shot at, effectively can glide slope out of country if it breaks, cheap,

Just ridiculously effective.

Not sure. He was a former Marine Cobra pilot. Been with the Air Force Reserve out of Barksdale for about 5 or 6 years I'd guess. I think he just recently pinned on Major.

I was expecting to see some shock and awe type shite. I am disappoint

If a 60 year old airplane laying waste in modern times because it's relatively cheap and psychologically terrifying isn't shock and awe, I don't know what shock and awe is.

By the time you see the 52, if you do see it, it's already dumped its payload. Do you run? Are you the target?

FAT?

That's uncalled for. BUF is bad enough. It's a beautiful airplane.
