that's what happens when you want to tell people where they can or can't live.

I can't blame folk for not applying. Make $30k a year to get shot at and respond to calls from people who generally despise you. Deal with people like Gravy questioning your every move and now a mayor who legitimizes those kinds of race baiters.

Seriously, what did they expect? Officers ambushed and killed, administration hates them, large portion of population hates them, low starting salary and good chance of being indicted and tried for doing your job. What's not to love?

ETA. This is how the real trouble starts. Now they will lower standards and take people they would have screened out previously. Those people will become the "bad apples" that will cause problems down the road. Reference NOPD in the 90's.

So you're saying demonizing police isn't a good recruiting tactic?

Why would anyone want to join a force where the mayor, most of the city council, their lackeys and many of those who you are supposed to serve openly hate you and your profession.

When they celebrate the murderers of your brethren. When they laud child molesters and rapists as pillars of their community.

We may have reached the point of no return.

A very clear and significant step in the downward spiral. A city ruled by ignorants cannot survive.

Dallas is having the same issues.

Nobody wants to be a police officer.

I think you could say that about any job. Hmmmm. Work 65-70 hours a week at my first job and have a second one to make 100k? Sign me up!

As a non BR resident this whole situation would be funny if I didn't spend so much time in BR.

It is rough to find someone who can pass the test and low $30k equals low recruitment. Years ago cost of living was less in BR and a new recruit made a fair living. Then you had more support from the mayor.

I would not come out of retirement to work in the new conditions they are faced with to make in the low 30's.
