I looked for an automotive board and didn't see one, so posting this here.

Our mechanic is replacing the starter to our 2017 GMC Acadia and called and mentioned both the engine mount and the sway bar bushings are broken. The car was just in the shop a week ago getting an oil change, and neither of these things was apparently noticed at that time. The mechanic said they must not have looked. Question - I am not looking to dump money into this vehicle. Is replacing the enging mount and/or sway bar bushings a must, or can we survive a bit longer without addressing these. TIA

Outdoor board is good at this. Both are relatively easy to spot. Take a picture of them and post it.

not to be an arse but i'm really not sure what type of answer your seeking here from someone who can't even see how bad it is or how much longer you're talking about keeping the vehicle.

Is not doing these repairs going to cause an accident that kills or maims my wife, or will it just be a big inconvenience when the car breaks down and I have to have these fixed?

I replaced the motor mounts on my trailblazer by myself in like 30 minutes. It's not that hard to do stuff like that.

You may be ok if the bushings are breaking down. I'd honestly be surprised if they are.

ETA... I just looked at what the motor mounts look like for that vehicle. 3 are the "can" type mount and their failure will be obvious because your vehicle will idle rough. The last mount is just a stabilizer and carries no weight. You can change that easy, or ignore UT

Get a pic if how bad they are. That will tell us more.

As a check of the motor mount. Park your vehicle, pop the hood and get someone to rev the motor while in park. Do you see excessive movement? If not, don't worry about it.

If it's making a bad clank noise when you go over bumps, it's your "stabillizing" links on your sway bar. You don't have to change those either...

Eitek1, this is helpful. When you say "excessive movement" when you rev the motor, what sort of movement am I looking for?

They wouldn’t look at any of that during a normal oil change.

But your sway bar bushings aren’t super necessary. You may get some body roll, but you are fine.

The engine mount, it depends. How bad is it? What other issues are you having?

If it's a transverse mount motor it will make a clunk when you shift into drive from reverse. Usually the top dogbone mount fails over time.

Neither will leave you stranded or kill your wife. Depending on which motor mount it is, both should be fairly easy to change also. I imagine there are plenty of videos on youtube that will walk you through step by step, how to do both.

I have not noticed anything wrong with how the car drives or shifting whatsoever. Makes the same noises its always made. Sounds like a strut may be loose when you drive down uptown streets, but everything makes noise driving down some of these streets. We brought the car in today because the starter seemed to be going out. Today is when they noticed these issues. A week ago, the car was in the shop for an oil change and they also replaced the purge valve (under recall). Nothing was said at that time about these issues.

The engine should tilt slightly. It's "torquing" against the motor mounts. With good mounts it should move slightly. With bad motor mounts, it will move noticeably.
While stopped you can shift from drive to reverse and look for the same movement. It will be noticeable.

Eitek1, and if I rev the engine and shift from drive to reverse and I don't see any movement, than I can assume the mounts are, at least for the time being, functional?

If it were mine, I wouldn't worry about it. Like the other poster mentioned, it's likely the "dogbone" but you'd know if it was bad because it would be noisy going from drive to reverse.

Here is a video of the mounts for reference.

If someone pays for their oil to be changed, is paying for someone to put on a starter, and is asking basic questions about bushings and engine mounts, I wouldn’t suggest that he take on changing the engine mount himself.

Depends.

A broken motor mount - depending on location and how many others there are can be serious - torque from the engine revving can allow the motor to twist. If it twists enough shite can break bad.

Worn out sway bar bushings, again depending on how badly work, can allow a "death wobble" type situation or most likely your vehicle will handle like a wet rag - a lot of body roll in the turns and feed back in the steering wheel when on bumpy roads.

Of the two the motor mount would be my bigger worry - again depending on the location.

The good news is if you're at all handy you can fix both of these yourself with a little help from You Tube.

Do you notice a knock or thud when accelerating? How much longer are you planning to keep the vehicle?

absolute lemon vehicles. I can't count on one hand how many times we had to change the god damn broken engine mounts on the acadia we use to have. I do not miss that vehicle.

I would get the broken stuff fixed or it’s liable to tear something else up as it continues to fail.

Acadia’s are not known to be great cars as you are finding out.
