What could go wrong?

“One of B.C.’s health authorities had a plan to keep a hospital emergency room open despite having no physicians to cover the department by demanding family doctors attend to any of their patients and ordering unsupervised nurses to call 911 for those in medical distress.

CTV News has obtained a memo sent to doctors and administrators at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital in Smithers on Friday titled “No physician BVDH ER Coverage Mitigation Plan.” It includes instruction to call “the responsible family physician of all attached patients that present” to attend them in the hospital when there would be no doctors on shift.

Nurses alone in the emergency department “will be able to provide comfort measures and some first aid…or phone 911 if the person presenting is in immediate medical distress.”

I imagine this is in a small town and they are, in fact, trying it.

ER nurses will also have the opportunity to encourage patients to commit medically assisted suicide.

A rural family doc can handle most of the crap that comes into the ED.

How many people showing up to the Emergency Room are actually in an emergency?

ERs should be able to turn away people who don’t need immediate medical assistance.

Smithers

Just Googled this town, it is postcard-level beautiful

It also only has a population of 5,351, so I can see why a continuously staffed ER may not necessarily be a requirement.

A simple Google search shows Smithers is a town of 5000. I'm sure they would prefer an ED physician but the hospital probably can't afford them.

He would carry a pager. Up until the 80s this model was exactly how EDs were covered.

John Morgan is in a dilemma. Can't sue the doctors for malpractice but can he sue them for no practice?

Ferriday and Tallulah have spanking new 70,000+ SF hospitals... aaaaand one of them is back under fed investigations for medicare abuse to pay the bills.

So you go to the ER and they just call 911?

It’s a mitigation plan.

In terms you can understand:

It’s in case shite hits the fan. Good grief. They weren’t planning to not have doctors, it’s a plan in case there’s no doctors.
