That's what happens when people go to the ER for a sore throat or toothache bc they know they can't be turned away for not having insurance.

Learned and passed down behavior. Work the system instead of using common sense.

And the insured are going to avoid it when they can. They are about to reap what they sowed when they climbed into bed.

The decision by OLOL to take on these patients still baffles me.

Deal made

quote:

Baton Rouge General made plans to eventually close its Mid-City hospital emergency room, but a last-minute deal on Wednesday with the Department of Health and Hospitals will keep the ER open.

A report by Daily Report Wednesday morning said hospital employees were notified early this morning of the pending closure.

Just after Noon on Wednesday, a news release stated the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has been in discussions with officials from Baton Rouge General this morning to develop a solution that would ensure the Mid-City campus emergency room to remain open.

"We are committed to protecting access to care in the Baton Rouge community," writes DHH Secretary Kathy Kliebert. "The Department has identified a solution that provides additional uncompensated care funding to Baton Rouge General Hospital that meets their current needs and allows this critical component of the region's health care delivery network to continue providing emergency room services. Our discussions with the Baton Rouge General leadership this morning confirmed that, as a result of this additional funding, they will continue to operate the ER. We'll be working with all of our regional health care partners to develop a plan that ensures the sustainability of emergency services in Mid-City Baton Rouge."

"We're a community hospital. We're planning on being here in the community for years to come. Been here over a 100 years and hope to be here for the next 100 but that means looking forward and find out how we deliver more care for the dollars that are currently in the system," said Dr. Floyd Roberts, Baton Rouge General Medical Director in a previous interview.

Approximately 50,000 patients go through the Mid City emergency room each year.

And where, exactly, did the money come from to make this deal? Privatization gets more expensive yet again.

It's already happening. Bluebonnet had a record number of elective joint replacements a few weeks ago. Perception is reality. Taking on the uninsured is part of the "mission", but is in no way a sustainable practice. It's the "old mall vs new mall" scenario.

I had heard rumors earlier in the week that Ochsner was going to be administering funds to keep the General's ER Bluebonnet location running. Not sure how much merit that has or how it plays into the Mid-City location.

This just isn't true. If hospitals were only concerned with profits, they wouldn't have ever seen indigent patients or taken Medicare/Medicaid patients. They would have never written off a bill. They would've rarely settled a bill.
