But in a note published online Wednesday, Venable and News Sentinel editor Jack McElroy said they were unable to verify the account after it was published because Schmitt-Matzen refused to provide the identities of the child's family or the nurse who purportedly called him to the hospital, which is not named in the story.

quote:

"The News Sentinel cannot establish that Schmitt-Matzen's account is inaccurate, but more importantly, ongoing reporting cannot establish that it is accurate," McElroy and Venable wrote. "Therefore, because the story does not meet the newspaper's standards of verification, we are no longer standing by the veracity of Schmitt-Matzen's account."

well if hospitals in the area cant confirm a kid died in that manner it probably doesn't help. Surely the news stations contacted every hospital looking to see who it was.

Are you telling the children of America that Santa (and the dead kid) isn't real?

do hospitals often release information about a child to the media?

that I do not know, but it sounds like the media got played bc everyone is trying to verify the story and it seems like nobody is stepping forward to verify it. Surely someone, a nurse, a family member or anyone besides the santa would have verified it and spoken to the media. Once again looks like the media went for clickbait and has an egg on their face

It never sounded that real to me TBH. Just sounded like one of those click bait articles on Facebook. "Schmitt-Matzen was just playing Santa at the hospital, but you'll NEVER guess what happened when this sick boy sat in his lap..."

wtf? So because he wouldn't give the family's names, he's full of shite?

Not saying he didn't lie, but until there's proof he did, calling him a liar is equally full of shite.

I fail to see how not wanting to release the name of a deceased child means the story didn't happen. I wouldn't say either.

Regardless it was a heartwarming story that I'm choosing to believe.

With Ryan Lochte and the Facebook fake news garbage this year - all stories should be met with a certain level of skepticism. Lying in 2016 is so hot.

Yesterday on Tommy Tucker, he played a sound clip from the Santa, explaining what happened.

Really sick if this is a hoax

Upvoted for spelling HIPAA correctly, then saw who posted it. I'd sure hope you'd get it right.

Exactly. People just want to believe this. But if I call the paper and say I saw a UFO in my backyard and there is zero other evidence to support it other than my call, the paper isn't going to print that.
