Why didn't they put winglets on the 787?

That's exactly the one thing I was thinking after that clip

Raked wingtips are similar in function to winglets. Some later versions will have traditional winglets.

The composite wings are designed to flex like bird. No need for winglets as the wing tips do have about a 20 degree curvature in them. The wings on those planes can really flex and provide huge lift. If you ever get a chance to see a takeoff from the front or back on a runway you will see exactly what I'm talking about.

I have walked out on the wing tip from the fuselage and as you progress towards the wingtip its like walking on a trampoline.

Pretty cool stuff.

I think the raked wingtipped birds are better looking than the planes with the winglet retrofits, i.e. 767-400, 747-8i, 787, 777-200LR-300ER.

How much one of those babies cost new?

Around $200 million. And that's for basically the shell.

The interior and engines are sold separately, then Boeing installs them for a cost as well. I forget the exact reasoning for selling things separately, but I want to say it has something to do with the liability of each thing.

Agreed, but when I was working in an MRO 10 years ago, winglet reftrofits were extremely profitable and they still are, with the newer split scimitar versions gaining in popularity.

The split scimitars are cool and very effective.

Interesting story about how winglets ended up on Boeing aircrafts...

An engineer at Boeing tried to convince the higher-ups that winglets would improve fuel efficiency and that Boeing should make them, but got nowhere with it. He ended up leaving Boeing, started his own company making winglets, selling them back to Boeing, then Boeing bought him out

-8 around 180 mil
-9 around 212 mil
-10 are going to be around 250 or so

Thats standard run of the mill pricing.
The higher end customers planes cost a little more as they have more luxurious setups installed.

And they sale the plane as a whole unit not separately.
The only time they sale basically a shell is for a business jet that a company purchases and sends to another company for customization.
Also Both GE and Rolls-Royce have separate warranty for their engines, but Boeing warranties their planes for the life of the aircraft (around 40 years)

It sounds like one of those urban legends, but it came from a longtime engineer when he was showing me around the factory.

I wonder how well that near vertical takeoff would go with the added weight of 300 passengers plus luggage.
