Didn't see this posted, but sounds pretty nasty. They've turned from rescue to recovery at this point. Tragic.

WAFB: Missing boater identified; boat operator hospitalized after crash

WEST FELICIANA PARISH, La. (WAFB) - A boat crash left one person injured and another person missing on the evening of Sunday, May 28, according to deputies with the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities were called to the scene on the Mississippi River downstream of the St. Francisville riverfront around 9 p.m.

WPSO identified the missing boater as Rachel Hann, 38, a resident of St. Francisville.

quote:

“After approximately 20 hours of continuous searching we’re now transitioning from a rescue operation to a recovery,” said West Feliciana Parish Sheriff Brian Spillman. “We feel confident that we’ve covered the water surface and river banks in a large enough area that we would have discovered Ms. Hann if she survived the crash. These are difficult decisions, but we’ve utilized boats, drones, and helicopters in our grid searches and, after consulting with her family, we will now continue daylight searches in hopes of a recovery,” Spillman added.

Anthony Bain, 37, was identified as the boat operator. He remains hospitalized.

“We’re still trying to piece together what happened,” said Spillman. “Our crisis response team is working closely with Wildlife and Fisheries agents to search the area where the crash occurred in hopes of locating the other victim.”

According to the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified of the crash by the U.S. Coast Guard. A passing tow boat reported the crash.

The injured victim, Bain, was airlifted to a trauma center, deputies said. Details about that person’s condition have not been released.

Sheriff Spillman said crews worked through the night and into the morning to search the crash site. However, one person remains unaccounted for.

Anyone know any details?

Did they hit another boat? A pier? Run aground?

Was the captain hammered?

I was on the diversion canal this weekend watching the APSD and Wildlife and Fisheries raking party barge operators over the coals while Bajas going 70 mph didn't seem too bothered. But what's new?

I've been out there around dusk on a small boat that was barely limping back to the ramp from a mechanical issue. Between the currents and the barges, that's the most scared I've ever been on a boat.

Sounds like a single boat accident, horrible.

I didn't realize St. Francisville had a riverfront and don't know of any docks or ramps near there except for the one in New Roads.

The dock there is how the ferry boats used to run from New Roads to St. Francisville. Now large paddle wheelers use the dock to let the old people and Asians off

This would be considered the old ferry landing.

Recreational boating in the Mississippi feels a bit like riding a moped on the interstate.

Gotcha. It's been a few years so I pulled up Google Maps to see if they had built up a true riverfront area and only saw the American Queen landing

I guess they might have come in through Bayou Sara, but I'm not sure why anyone would really want to go "recreationally" tooling around in the Miss River in a little boat either.

Pardon my ignorance, but I was unaware that recreational boating was allowed on the Mississippi River. Is it just certain locations?
