Tokyo (AFP) - The arrest of MtGox boss Mark Karpeles has begun to shed light on the defunct Bitcoin exchange after hundreds of millions of dollars in virtual currency vanished from its digital vaults last year.

But as details of a lengthy investigation by Japanese police trickle out, at least one crucial question remains unanswered: where is the money?

On Friday authorities issued a fresh arrest warrant for Frenchman Karpeles over claims he stole several million dollars from clients, including about $48,000 allegedly spent on a luxury canopy bed.

Nothing parts quicker than a fool and his money.

That shite is so dumb. Usually it's promoted by losers who pretend to be self-educated monetary policy experts and think the Fed is lining the pockets of Blankfein, etc.

Dumb yes, but there are some very sick and twisted individuals who use Bitcoin to carry out horrendous acts. I don't want to post it but just do research on it, it's a sick world.

BTC doesn't make much sense for the US, but it's a valuable option for areas with a much less stable currency. the best recent example is Greece

i'd imagine the vast majority of the heinous acts committed in the world are done with the US dollar. where is your sermon for the USD?

Yeah, that's going to be really helpful for a bunch of pensioners living on the island of Chios. They'll get a lot of use out of their private and public keys with their fast broadband connections on their fancy smartphones because some dorks on Reddit said so.

I won't claim to be an expert on blockchain technology, and think that aspect is interesting. But the cryptocurrency geeks vastly overestimate the technological sophistication of the common man across the world and underestimate the unbelievable hurdle they would have to overcome for widespread adoption for it to become a medium of exchange on par with real currencies.

i think if you ran an experiment and introduced BTC to a group of, say, middle school kids, as a currency alongside USD, that entire generation would adapt. i think you have it backwards and the majority of geeks enjoy having their "secret money" that the commons don't get to enjoy. it's that hipster-like "before you had ever heard of it" mentality. also please note: i own 0BTC and have never owned one. i'm not selling it, but just explaining that cryptocurrencies can have a place (and that place is the opposite of the USA)
