Birmingham Southern College may shut down

Looks like another small college may be closing the doors due to financial issues. I grew up in Birmingham and it was always considered a very good private college and consistently ranked high nationally. From an article I saw -
"Birmingham-Southern President Daniel Coleman is seeking $30 million in state funding for the private college - $12.5 million from funds provided by the American Rescue Plan Act and $17.5 million from the Education Trust Fund.
He is also seeking $5 million from the city of Birmingham and $2.5 million from Jefferson County."
As stated, the college has always had a good academic reputation -
"Birmingham-Southern is one of only six baccalaureate-liberal arts institutions in the country so classified by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to hold both AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation—and the designation of Phi Beta Kappa. Each year, Birmingham-Southern ranks #1 in Alabama and among the nation's best in percentage of all graduates accepted to medical, dental, or health-career programs; the college also ranks high nationally in graduates accepted to law school."
While I hate seeing the college potentially shut down, I don't believe that public funds should be used to prop up a private college, especially if the reason for need is due to unwise use of endowment funds. It will be next to impossible for such a small college (currently about 1,100 students) to replenish the endowment to sustain itself. BSC also has the extreme disadvantage of location, which is in the same neighborhood as Legion Field.
Over the next 10 years, I bet we see a lot of small private liberal arts colleges shutting down.

I imagine many colleges, that have seen the immediate surrounding areas that turned to shite over the decades, are in peril.

Seems odd that a SMU fan would be glad to see a lot of small liberal arts colleges to be shutting down.

The over promotion of a college education in the 80s and 90s led to current devaluation of a degree, the conversion of our university system to a money making enterprise engaged in fraud and false advertisement. I think it’s a big reason why our universities are now hotbeds for liberal radicalism. Shut them down.

It's ranked #463 by Forbes. If your college is ranked #463, you aren't really college material. You're just putting off getting a job.
Nobody will suffer if it closed its doors

Colleges are either:
A. Private, and thus a business. Should be supported by its customers. If no customers, then you shut down like any other business.
B. Public, thus a government service. Not enough citizens use the service to justify public funds, then it should be shut down like any unused government service (which doesn’t happen)

We need a large number of these small colleges to close.

Will be a damn shame if it comes to that. BSC has done a good job educating the kids that go there. But they have been struggling financially for a while now. Doesn’t help that they are located where they are. Samford seems to be doing well.

I wasn't too familiar with the Forbes ranking, so I checked it out. University of Memphis came in dead last at 498. Seems solid.

That means there are another 380 colleges lower ranked than SMU you'd have to be rejected by before you finally get accepted by Birmingham-Southern.

In a shite part of town
If you are choosing between there and Samford you choose Samford

The collapse of for-profit colleges will be fascinating.
Hell, there's a lot of "too big to fail" industries and societal mechanisms that are racing towards the cliff. "Fascinating" is an understatement for the coming pain.

These ‘indoctrination finishing schools’ have run their course.

Good, we need more of these schools to close. I know LA has too many colleges.
