thanks for that analysis.

Yet I bet you spend hours sitting in the water with a cooler of beer in 100 degree heat trying to catch one fish that you throw back immediately.

There's a reason most riders are doctors or other professionals. Enjoy your bass boat.

Eta I hit 65mph bombing down Roan mountain on tires no thicker than my thumb with 130psi air pressure on a bike made of carbon that doesn't weigh an ounce over 12lbs. If that's boring then I would love to know what you find exciting.

I just hate when someone who is working for a living has to wait behind a group of cyclists who won't get over. My sympathies always go to the ones who are working.

I hate it when someone's job requires them to be in a vehicle at 9am on a Saturday morning in a national park and there are cyclists on the road lol

At some point the authorities really need to start enforcing laws against the bikers and not just the vehicle operators. I didn't watch the video and only saw a couple of still shots at impact and post impact, but looks like this rider was breaking federal law and ignoring safety recommendations. They should press charges against him. Had on dark clothing and looked to be at least 2/3 of the way to the center line entering a curve. Driver is a jerk for leaving the scene, But would love to see him get a lawyer and sue the biker.

quote:

Natchez Trace Parkway is a designated bicycle route, and bicycle traffic increases dramatically on the weekends and holidays,” reminded Acting Chief Ranger Calvin Farmer." “In Mississippi and Tennessee, bicyclists are allowed to use the full lane of traffic to ride in when necessary. Federal regulations require bicyclists to ride single file, and riders are encouraged to move to the right to allow for vehicles to pass. It is also highly recommended riders wear high-visibility clothing and flashing front and rear lights. Vehicle drivers must provide a safe distance when overtaking and passing a bicyclist," Farmer added.

It said federal regulation requires them to ride single file. Based on what I read he wasn't doing so. Is that incorrect?

No such federal law. The Trace also has new signs put up in the last 4 months that say cyclist may use full lane.

On a side note, I do think cyclist should stay to the right except when in heavy traffic when doing so isn't safe. They are States that have this law (including the part about when it's safe to do so), which from what I understand Tennessee now currently has to some extent.

I guess the park ranger must be mistaken.

He was if he said federal regulations. The only federal regulation is if the group has a special use permit, which does require single file, lights, etc.

Having said that, most ethical cyclist consider riding two abreast poor form.

Sweet, always been poor form and most cyclist don't do it. I haven't checked the Superintent's compendium, but I doubt she would allow it either.

I only saw a snippet of the vid, so unless he was just passing the other cyclist it appears they were two abreast.

WKRN

quote:

“He’s never been in clips before. He’d never been in, he hadn’t biked since he was a kid. So I thought what a wonderful place to teach him how to bike. The Natchez Trace, where we were biking, you’re allowed to ride in your lane and it’s posted as such. So I thought that would be a good place for Tyler to start out.”

quote:

“We rode single file almost all day. At the moment of that attack we were climbing a hill, we were almost done and he was coming up beside me to kind of take the lead.”

Goodman says the driver intentionally hit Noe and kept driving.

“He just decided rather through rage, or through something against us bikers, he just decided he wanted to take one of us out. I’ve had a lot of close calls but not somebody that was aiming at me.”

quote:

Thousands of bikers frequent the parkway, where a number of signs are posted that say bikers may use the full lane.

“It’s a park, so it’s not a place you go to from Point A to Point B. The car is supposed to treat us like a car and go around us,” said Goodman.

quote:

While Noe’s first reaction was that he is done with biking, Goodman wants to get him back out on a bike and even persuade him to still try for that Iron Man.

Goodman also told us someone from a bike company even reached out to offer Noe a bike. He was borrowing the one he was riding and it’s now destroyed.

The Trace around Jackson and Tupelo is most definitely used to get from Point A to B.
