A nice overview of American history with great illustrations.

The book was a companion volume to the great TV series of the same name (good luck finding that -- it might be at some libraries). Here's a 2 1/2 minute clip summing up Cooke's insights -- watch it if you dare:

Now imagine how difficult it will be to find a decent history book when today's college kids are writing them.

For those interested in the Revolutionary and Early Republic eras, you may want to check out Nancy Isenberg's Fallen Founder. Isenberg is a history professor at LSU and provides an alternative, more sympathetic, view of Aaron Burr. It's a good read

I'm reading The Glory And The Dream by William Manchester right now. It's a two volume narrative history of American politics and culture from 1929 to Watergate and covers the Depression, WWII, the Cold War, the 50s, Civil Rights, the beatniks-turned-hippies, the Space Race, and Vietnam.

It's a long but fantastic read, and really gives you insight into our parents' and grandparents' world back then.

If you want to learn about the Americas pre and during European settlement. Great book I'm currently reading. It will totally reshape the way you think about the "new world" and Indians in general, which isn't "new" at all actually.
