Best time (airlines and hotel) to go to NYC?

Sometime this summer. Is there a better month than other months? And where should I stay? I only know the lower financial.

I would imagine the summer to be miserably hot with all the walking around you'd be doing.

The summers aren't any hotter, but there's way more steel and concrete in NYC than anywhere in LA, which turns up the radiant heat factor up a couple notches, also known as the heat island effect. Theres also way less air conditioning as well. Subway platforms especially are saunaesque.
Honestly, the best time to go is May/early June or Sept/Oct. If you time it right you'll be able to see the leaves changing.
ETA- I forgot to add that you walk around almost everywhere, vs. driving in LA, so be prepared for that.
ETA2- Where to stay- how much $$ are you willing to spend? How much partying do you want to do?
The Rivington Hotel in the LES is pretty rocking, so is the Standard on the west side. Lastly, look into the NoMad Hotel- has possibly the best mixology bar downstairs. Be prepared to spend the $$$ though.

Everyone warned me that the summer in Key West would be miserable. I went in July. It was hot, but no different than summertime anywhere else.
Everyone warned me that Vegas would be miserable at the time I went. I went. It was hot, but no different than being home during that time of year.
ETA: I should add that both have swimming pools everywhere you turn, which helps. What the poster above me described does sound a bit miserable.

We go every Thanksgiving so I can't speak to the summer months (hotter'n hell from what they say)... If vacationing, I wouldn't stay in the financial district or in lower Manhattan, I'd stick close to Central Park. We always stay at the Hilton Midtown which is huge & well kept. It's a few blocks from Central Park and a few blocks from Times Square & between several subway stations to get you anywhere. If you want higher end lodging, there are plenty of Hotels on Central Park.

Oh.. and we always catch the non-stop MSY-EWR on Southwest. You can usually get great rates.

What a weird map. Aside from the childish style, Financial is misspelled and they screwed up the labeling on Stuyvesant

I stayed at the Grand Hyatt (on 42nd St., I think.) a few years ago. It's right next door to Grand Central Terminal, so you're centrally located with easy access to subways, trains and cabs. It's not super cheap, but was very reasonable for NYC. It might be worth checking into.
It was 4th of July weekend on that trip. Record heat. In retrospect, it's apparent to me now that my ex was trying to fricking kill me. She walked my arse from Mid-town down to Battery Park, up to about 77th (Dakota and the Gugg), across the Brooklyn Bridge, Greenwich Village, Central Park, and pretty much everything in between (not in that order) over the course of three days. I couldn't understand why I was walking 35 blocks when the subway was only $2.25... She was definitely trying to kill me.
Personal problems aside, NYC is awesome. And don't believe the idiots who will tell you New Yorkers are all assholes. Not true. Enjoy your trip!

Gotcha. Look into the Standard Hotel. It sits over an abandoned railway that has since been renovated into a park (the high line). There's a beer garden downstairs, and tons of places to go out around the neighborhood. The E and L trains are within walking distance too.

I also stayed at a place called the Hudson in the west 50s near Columbus Circle once. Nice rooms, but tiny. Only about $125-150 at the time. Rocking bar off of the lobby (c. 2009), but a Crown & water was about 12 bucks. In their defense, I'm not sure what kind of water it was. Might have been some of that Bobby Boucher glacier water.
