Best way to childproof is to teach them gun safety and to respect guns. It is usually in the house that a child doesn't learn about guns where accidents happen. For instance, if he/she were to see you cleaning or doing whatever with the gun and you put it away, they will search for it. If you teach them and don't make it a secret, they won't care.

Biometric for pistols
For shotguns just put a couple of threaded hangers above a closet door... out of sight, out of reach for kids, but easily accessible if you need it.

Bolted them to my bedframe vertically under the bed skirt. One on each side of the bed. Work great. Slim and hidden
