TL; DR but here it is.

quote:

Press Release BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL, NEW ORLEANS, LA Investigation and Action Stemming from Classroom Incident on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Benjamin Franklin High School The administration of Benjamin Franklin High School has conducted an investigation into a classroom incident on Thursday, May 4, 2017 involving a full-time substitute teacher. Findings from this investigation are that the persistent assertion of the teacher’s own views about a highly-charged term overcame his professional responsibilities; that his decision to start and to escalate the interaction resulted in neglect of his duty to create an environment for students that is safe and secure; and that this did not represent high quality teaching and learning, as outlined in the school’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. Although this investigation was aided by a video capturing a few minutes of the exchange between the substitute teacher and students, interviews with the substitute teacher, the students in the immediate exchange, and students in the classroom provided necessary context and information. This afternoon, May 9, 2017, the employee submitted his resignation pending administrative action, effective immediately. Additionally, the employee is restricted from campus and school events for the next three years. Benjamin Franklin High School considers the cultural and socio-economic diversity of its school body as a major strength, and is being intentional about creating an environment that supports and advances a diverse community. During the current year, two forums on race relations have taken place, and a chapter of the Anti-Defamation League’s “No Place for Hate” was reactivated. Several decisions have been made already in preparation for the next school year, including: • Providing professional training for all employees at the beginning of next school year to recognize and address bias, marginalization, and racism; • Training a full-time employee as the school’s Title IX Coordinator; • Contracting with a local organization to work with students and faculty on restorative justice, leadership, and advocacy. It is also worth noting that three faculty members are organizing a Civil Rights tour for students during the fall break, and that the rising senior class officers are organizing a senior trip next spring that is built around community service and community building. Dr. Widhalm, the Head of School, reported that in the hours and days following the incident, there was an outpouring of concern from faculty, students, and alumni that this occurred, and that “this is not Franklin.” Dr. Widhalm added, “I apologize to the students, parents, faculty, and alumni that a classroom became a place for such unprofessional and unacceptable conduct. It has reinforced a continuing focus on the responsibility that we have to make Franklin an inclusive, secure, and encouraging place where all students can develop their full academic, social, and personal potential.”

Based on the little evidence we have, it appears that this wasn't some sort of lecture or lesson on the word, so if he's just casually dropping n bombs on high school students because he thinks it should be ok, well then I'm not gonna say he's cut out for teaching.

Not that he should be fired (1A), but you just don't do that.

I'm confused. Did the teacher use the N-word or did the teacher allow students to use it?

correct decision.

the teacher could have handled this better and could have used this for great discourse. But he didn't and he antagonized the kid a bit

From what I understand is that he was a on site substitute teacher, maybe a coach? It seems he was trying to elicit some "thought provoking" dialog with the students. It all back fired in the douche bags face. Trying to be hip and cool got his arse canned.
