So you're taking multiple banging arse vacations and putting money in savings on a teachers salary + teaching summer school?

Yea, ok.

All of that is possible depending on his definition of a bangin vacation.

Depending on where he teaches he could have a starting base salary in the low 40's. Extra money teaching summer school.....if he isn't married and has no kids....then yup he can do those things.

I hate to call anyone delusional but. I'm guessing you are a coach who teaches on the side, and you probably goof off most of the class period with the players.

Yea, my starting salary, before you factor in coaching stipends, is higher than this

As a former teacher... HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA yearh ok.

Do you have your master's? I assume you live in Louisiana where they don't reward master's degrees that well. Let's put you in Alabama where the master's increase is more substantial.

With a master's and ten years of experience, you're making $50k/year.

Are you the head coach of a major sport? Probably not. Maybe you are, but probably not if you have time for side jobs in the summer.

So you probably make at most $2000/year for coaching (which includes a lot of your time.

What side gig do you have? Summer school? What is that? $2000/summer?

Private lessons? Let's say you're really popular and are making bank with it. $2000 for the two months? Let's say $3000 for the argument.

So you make $57k a year.

Stringed,
You say you were a teacher before, I assume you got out. I am looking to transition out of education myself, just wanted to see what you did now and how did you get started.
Thanks

This is the correct thinking. If he still stays at home, he's got no bills and does whatever he pleases.

Warning - I am going to depress you and myself.

I am a very good guitar player, so I became a full time musician. Taught lessons and played some gigs. Didn't like teaching lessons that much because they were inconsistent and most of my students didn't practice. Felt like I was wasting a lot of time. Not too much different than teaching except I was on track to make $50k/year on lessons alone, and I spent maybe 20-25 hours a week doing them.

Decided to go to graduate school because I had a high GRE score. Got a full fellowship and am currently studying rhetoric and composition with a focus on technical writing.

The original plan was to go get my PhD, but I have a family and I can't sacrifice another 5-6 years of my life. I want money again.

So I looked into tech writing jobs, but they are your typical 9-5, little vacation time, decent benefits, office jobs and I would make about the same amount as I would teaching.

Soooooo looks like I'll be going back into teaching next year, but that's okay because I can make $15k/year easily with guitar on the side. Add in the $50k a year as a teacher with time off and benefits, and I won't be doing too shabby.

If I could give you advice, it would be to force yourself to do something completely different. I had a unique opportunity with the support from my wife to go back to school. I decided to get a master's in English when I had already disliked being an English teacher. Should have gone into nursing I think.
