A lot of them nowadays are just for decoration. But that's not what they started out to be nor are all of them mainly for decoration.
And for the record, I've never had one nor do I plan on ever getting one. They cost like $100 for a good one and I have a lot other uses for $100 than buying a whip.

I've seen a lot of them and they were all old ball bearings. I've been riding since the 80s and never seen one with a mouse ball.
