I've been to lots of bars in lots of areas, and never had any conflicts. However, I've been out twice with an ex-marines and have seen shite go down both times with him. He never said a word to this other group of guys, but they ended up glaring at him and trying to start shite when he'd go up to the bar to get a drink.

We are similarly built, but I can't figure out why I've never had people try to start shite, but the two times I've gone out with him, people seem to want to pick a fight. I can't understand the reasoning or rationale behind any of it.

But, I've never had problems, yet my buddy has encountered shitheads both times we've gone out. Do these meatheads look for a specific type of person?

Also:

Louis CK explains it pretty well (only 2:38 and probably NSFW although Comedy Central censors the curse words):

He was my buddy. He had some PTSD issued and aggression issues, but it was a proximity friendship. He lived next door, so it was convenient. I would understand if he was starting shite, but he never once spoke or confronted the other group of guys, yet their gaze was cast on him the whole night.

Your buddy is viewed as a threat by other enraged males.

You are a pussy.

Alcohol helps but isn't the only key...

People who are naturally hyper-aggressive, and get set off at dumb shite.

Drunk guy says something or touches your girl, or a girl, and you feel the need to intervene by association of the relationship, or principal.

Drunk military personnel - "hyper-masculinity".

Is your buddy a tall guy/well built?

I have noticed some people that are tall+big tend to attract guys wanting to topple the mountain.

I'm am pretty sure it's your buddy. He likely interprets even a passing glance or small eye contact as some insult to his manhood. So he ups the ante by starting a stare down. Most rational people don't engage back so there is no fight. However, when he ups the ante with a few other similarly irrational males, it's not going to end good.

We both hover around 5'11 with muscular stocky builds. I'm a very laid back and happy drunk, he isn't. I wonder if this difference can be picked up on from across the bar.

I would understand this if he was the one starting the aggression. It was the other way around in both situations.

Yeah, he is probably bringing it on himself then.

Making eye contact and/or watching other groups of guys.

This is only anecdotal evidence, but after the age of 25, I've found that the amount of fights you're in is inversely proportional to your success in life.

It is mostly true for 18-25 as well.

This might be a possibility. Didn't realize people were so easily set off from a glance.

You are so infatuated with truck nuts you must sleep with a set in your mouth.
