The Turkish coast guard rescued a 10-month-old girl who drifted more than half a mile out to sea in a flotation device, the BBC reported.
On Friday, winds pushed Melda Ilgin far out into the Aegean Sea, off the western coast of Turkey, without her parents' noticing, The Telegraph reported.
Beachgoers unsuccessfully tried reaching the girl before the rescue boat arrived.

What the frick? Do you just get out there and say eh, she's too far off, might as well turn back.

I'd damn well have died before I turned back from saving the kid, whether she was mine or not.

I'm not going to drown trying to save a baby. And anyone who has ever swam in an ocean knows it's not exactly like swimming in a pool

well, I wouldn't advise some fattie (not saying you are) to try to swim half a mile in the ocean to save a baby. That would be more like heroic suicide.

What if it was a skinny person who wasn't a good swimmer?? Would that be better?

some people shouldnt have kids. I spent the weekend at orange beach with some of the fellas to get drunk and look at the women on the beach, well i spent all day yesterday keeping my eye on a 2year old by us that constantly walked into the ocean with no flotation device on and parents were a good 30yards behind us laughing and playing on the beach. no one watched this child for a good hr straight. i was just waiting for one of the waves to knock her down and take her in. It literally gave me chills to watch this.

Well that is certainly an angle to take into consideration, but there are easier strokes like the back or breast.

Sorry if I offended any fatties. Skinny folk can be out of shape and bad swimmers too.

It's easy to say you would be a hero, but I would bet the people tried, realized it was way too dangerous, then told the coast guard. And the baby was rescued and no one drowned. Seems like they did the right move.

Exactly. You have to have a license to drive, fish, hunt, as well as damn near everything else. Any jackass can have a baby with zero training and freely frick that kid up.

How the frick do you let this happen? Was there not a sense of urgency at all? How do you let a baby float that far out

there is absolutely no reason for a ten month old to be anywhere around a beach, let alone floating on some shite in the water....

Better yet, once it happened, how do you not find someone to perform an easy back stroke to combat the waves and rescue the kid? Seems like I've read somewhere that it would have been just that simple to rescue the poor baby.
