Where else would you put a ski lodge?

Those pics are making me claustrophobic, and knowing you're completely underground with no way out.

I'm saying not RIGHT AT the base of the mountain where it's pretty much guaranteed you'll be hit by the avalanche.

I always wondered why they couldn't take a few propane torches and melt a road through there. Of course I was born and raised in Louisiana so what do I know about snow.

Everywhere in that valley over the past five thousand years has been hit by at least an avalanche. It's what it do. It's the winter version of our 1,000 year flood events.

You could build the resort on top of the mountain I guess.

Like I said, have no idea so didn't know if that's a typical location for them.

Um a little farther away from the base of the mountain?? No reason why there can't be some sort of buffer zone.

Jesus

Didn't realize this is the same place where the NOPD recruits new officers from.

I suspect that hotel is not in a typical avalanche path, that the rock/avalanche flow usually diverts to some other place in the valley. I can't imagine it being there otherwise.

If there were abnormal snow levels I'm surprised they had guests (particularly if the hotel has previously been impacted). Which leads me to think it hasn't.

Climbers typically know and avoid camps in avalanche paths, and they face a much more temporary risk, obviously.

That's like saying hey it's 1000 feet from the mountain base lets move it 1500 feet, an avalanche will keep picking up speed till it has reached a level plane. No ski lodge is going to be 3 miles away from the actual mountain.

Which would do nothing to help. Avalanches are a devastating force and when they stop the snow is like hardened cement.

A lot of resorts are on the mountain so that hey are ski in/ski out. They usually know when snow is building up to a critical mass and they have teams that go up with dynamite to set off smaller avalanches ahead of time so it doesn't build up. Not sure what happened here but it must have been dumping for a while.
