I did a nursing home thread last week. My mom had a stroke last year and is paralyzed on her left side. She is in a nursing home which I visited every night after work before the virus. Since the virus I’ve visited outside her window after work. With the new restrictions I was wondering if anyone here knew. I would ask the administrator but he didn’t like us visiting outside already ( said we startled his staff) .... TIA

Even if allowed it would be a terrible idea to visit her right now.

I have no idea of the actual answer, but I would have to guess that even with it being legal to visit outside, the nursing home can implement whatever policies they wish.

Good luck :/

I have seen families standing by a window, visiting with their loved one through the window. Sad as hell, but necessary I guess.

Not sure. Waiting on Xi Edwards for latest list of acceptable actions.

it’s outside and I’d be by myself. Since her stroke she isn’t right mentally and doesn’t understand what’s going on. I’m sure you’re right I just worry about her getting depressed

While I don't work in the nursing home industry, I do work in the senior care industry (IL, AL & Memory Care).

Our company took the stand approximately 10 days ago to not allow any "non-essential" visitors inside our community --- and yes, this does include family members. Sucks, I know. But so far, we have zero reported cases of the Corona inside our communities.

Call the administrator or call the parent company to find out. If you are allowed in, you'll be asked to answer 3 or 4 questions and have your temperature checked --- and please make sure you wash your hands for 20 seconds and don't touch anything.

This sounds crazy. Surely the Administration of the Nursing Home has established alternative ways for families to communicate with loved ones. Talking or even just seeing your loved ones through a window is an easy solution if the design of the Home allows it. Some Nursing Homes are assisting their residents with FaceTime or other live video contact.

Contact the Administrator again. If no solution, reach out to the Ombudsman for your Mom's Home.

Good Luck!

I was told we could visit outside the window but that windows could not be raised
Good luck getting someone to raise the blinds

I was able to drop off balloons for my Grandpa’s birthday but not a card

Can you drop off balloons or something that can be sanitized so that she knows you are thinking of her?

I had a really bad day Saturday after they wouldn’t let me leave the card, that & the fact I was told I didn’t understand how hard this was for the staff.

If they refuse to let you look at her through the window or deliver items that can be sanitized report them, they cannot cut off all communication.
It sounds like they don’t want anyone to see how short staffed they are.

There isn’t much you or I can do until this blows over but vent.

I’m sorry, at least I can talk on the phone to my Grandpa, I can’t imagine how hard this is for you.

Even if you could doesn’t mean you should. Use common sense baw.

There’s a 99% chance I can go visit my grandparents and they’ll be completely fine, but that 1% keeps me away for the time being. And it sucks because they boiled crawfish Saturday.

You just keep going to her window, period. Do what you have to do. That is heartbreaking.

Do what you can. Maybe consider doing video conferencing with Zoom? Next best thing at least.

We're actually doing that with "Virtual Happy Hours" now with friends. Can be fairly fun.

Sorry to hear about your mom. I admire you for visiting her every night and for wanting to see her now. That’s really sweet. So many don’t appreciate or care that much.
