Local meteorologists will stay relevant in many markets because of severe weather/hurricanes. You'll often get more in-depth information during tornado warnings/watches than on the Weather Channel or somewhere else, where they can't localize it quite as well.
In the old days, sports used to come before weather...now most stations center their weather forecasts around the ratings meter transitional points. Similarly, how many times does a short weather segment lead the newscast unless there's breaking news or a murder? Unless its sunny and hot during the summer, there's a good chance you'll see the meteorologist before the first news reporter.

sounds kinda crazy, but local news apparently gets some of the highest tv ratings of the day...just notice the amount of commercials that are played if you don't believe it...and weather is typically last, since it is the most popular segment...
