Tim Cook has been trying to keep his life private for a long time. I'm guessing this has a lot more to do with pressure he received to be a face of the gay community than his desire to put his sexual preference on display.
He's been pretty openly gay for a long time, so I'm not sure why people act like prior things this year "outed him".
