Don't normal post much serious stuff on the OT but does anyone have any recommendations on alcohol counseling or rehab in Houston? Don't want to go into details but I need some info and it is not for me but a family member that needs help. Any help would be appreciated.

AA is the best place to start. For people seriously addicted, rehab centers probably are better for DETOX.

Most facilities will eventually bring people to AA meetings.

If the person is willing to just listen, AA is a good place to start.

If the person isn't willing, then there isn't much chance the facility will work.

Even when willing, the % of people who make it is pretty small.

In pretty sure they have a pill you can take that keeps you from drinking, if you drink on it you start puking everywhere or something. I would just use that and carry on with my life.

Your friend and his/her friends and loved ones need to be prepared for what might be a long and painful journey. While some addicts improve on their own or with relatively light forms of treatment, others require extensive treatment to get better and some aren't able to achieve significant improvement and their life eventually completely falls apart directly or indirectly because of their addiction

Good luck.

That will get you started. AA works if the person is truly ready and will do a few simple things I am living proof

There's a good one at the corner of Willpower and Responsibility St.

I can understand an addiction to a hardcore drug, but really don't get the alcohol thing outside of just being weak minded. Sorry for being harsh.

Good luck to your friend. Maybe he needs to find a hobby or something productive to fill his time with that's hard to do with a hangover. I'd start there.

If the person is experiencing DTs or is a daily heavy drinker make sure the detox is medically supervised. Alcohol detox is the only one that can kill you, most hard drug detox will make you wish you were dead, but alcohol detox can cause seizures and kill you.
