Anyone here ever looked into part time transcription work?

I don't have a ton of natural talent but one thing I've always been good at is typing. I can generally type between 90-100 wpm bordering on 97% accuracy. I currently don't do shite with this ability other than post on message boards. I figured I might look around town and see if there are any companies that would let me work a few hours a week from home basically doing nothing but listening to audio and transcribing the text. I have a full time job so I'm only looking for something part time that I can easily do from home.
Does anyone have any experience with something like this? Any major drawbacks to consider?

Probably won't get paid much

oh yeah I'm not trying to make a ton of money, just figured I'd put my time to use while just sitting on the couch.
Even if it just fills up my gas tank and provides beer money for the month, at least that's something I guess.

Are you referring to transcribing in the medical field?

Nothing specific really. I imagine that for medical I'd probably have to have a strong background there so I wouldn't probably look into that much.

Yea medical is the only transcription work I know about, and I was going to suggest a heavy knowledge of medical terminology. I know it paid well, but like everything it has its pros & cons.

Shoot for the stars, brother.

That's still a thing? I thought there is software that can transfer audio into text?

You should try to get work typing up the closed captions for adult movies. That would be a plum gig.

screw that.
widdle something out of wood or tie flies like I do.

Medical transcription is a dying industry. Docs these days check the boxes and type in their brief synopsis on their own terminals.
The only transcription still being done in any volume is legal. You'd have to work behind the scenes for a certified court reporter who would sign their name to the transcript and certify it as their own. I'm not sure of the ethical implications of that.
Many years ago when I was in college I worked one summer for a friend of mine who was a court reporter in the federal courts. He had an extremely complex and lengthy case involving money laundering, several months worth of testimony. He farmed some of it out to me and paid me by the page. I can tell you that it was very demanding work transcribing from audio tape, keeping all of the speakers straight and dealing with indistinct or mumbled speech. It required frequent cross-reference to the shorthand tape to get it right and the only one who can fully read a shorthand tape is the one who created it. In other words, you need to do the work under close supervision from the court reporter so working from home would pretty much be out of the question.

Create macros for the twenty or so most commonly used phrases and guttural sounds.
As far as regular closed captions, that's pretty much been taken over by speech-to-text programs.

when I was in college I worked at a transcription service for about a year. We didn't have to do like you did with court reporting and assigning speakers and all that...the company was a service provided to mostly doctors and lawyers that I guess would just keep a recorder on them or something and just speak notes into it which we would listen to and transcribe. That's more along the lines of what I was wanting; just a simple a)listen to audio b)type it out

I get that from the specific position you're talking about, but surely there are some smaller scale transcription jobs that can be done from home I would think yeah?
