A CPA would most likely be more than that, but if you have anything halfway complicated a good CPA should pay for themselves in tax savings. If you have a straight forward return, turbo tax should do everything that you need.

Stock purchases and sales
- I have the tax documents for this
Bought a first time home purchase
- are there tax incentives for this that Turbo Tax deluxe won't have?
Took out student loans
- Have the tax documents for this
Wife and I both switched jobs (easy part)

It can get pricey. I just got done actually. In total it cost me $425
My taxes were different this year so it was kinda helpful( got $1,600 on top of my regular) but to be honest I could have filled it out myself and will next year.
If what Mir is saying is true I would just file with the IRS for free. It may take a little longer but HR block fees add up
Also obligatory ......frick the IRS and income tax. Both are illegal and it's bullshite. I pay to damn much in taxes and don't see shite for it.
frick all those siting at home getting a check once a month and making Medicaid with their lazy diabetic asses.
Oh and frick some crop farmers. We spend to much money subsidizing your corn all so that you can grow tons of it and turn into sugar or put it in my gas.

Mine at H&R block was about $550, but they can deduct it from your refund so you don't owe anything up front.

Look at it this way.
How much at you willing to pay someone to get money that is rightfully yours.
Doing it yourself or with turbotax may be a little slower than just handing someone your paperwork but you get more of your own money back.
Turbo tax will have every deduction you need or could want from mileage to first time home buyer

If your taxes are simple, you're fine going to HR Block or filing yourself with TurboTax if you're up for it. Many CPA's don't want small returns like that bc the costs outweigh the benefits. Most CPA firms are $400/$500 minimum for a 1040.

What about state, where do you go to e-file your Louisiana returns (and that's assuming just one state). Still the IRS (I wouldn't assume so)? For $50 it guides me through it and does both federal and state.

If you'd rather spend the 50 for it to file both by all means do it
Just don't waste the money by going to an H&R Block and shelling out 500 for the same exact service

Nah I never have done that. Where do you file state taxes though? Does Louisiana let you e-file?

Yes Louisiana let's you efile it's on their website just google something like
E-file Louisiana state taxes

Turbo tax is easy, I've used it for 10 years.

I've always used Turbo Tax but for kicks I used Credit Karma this year since it was free.
It didn't have the same bells and whistles and not nearly as much hand holding.
My taxes are simple, but I wouldn't recommend for someone with a difficult return.

All depends on the return. I wasn't a CPA and my billing was $95 an hour I think. Maybe 90. By the time you add in my rate and 1/2 hour for one of the partner CPA's to review and sign, you could get a return done for under $200 in some cases. If you wanted to efile through us it was another 30-40 I think

I use TurboTax Pro, but this year its going to be a lot more complicated. I bought a house, took out student loans, and switched jobs (and my wife switched jobs).
I'm considering going into an H&R block and working with a person. What is the price point for doing that? I think I'm due a pretty big return and want to make sure I maximize it.
I had a consultation with H&R Block since this is my first year as 1099-Self Employed, and I was quoted ~$300. I am single, not a parent, not a homeowner, and have zero student loans. He quoted me $300 for simply filing my taxes as 1099 (and W-2 for the first two months of this year). Hysterical. If you read the Personal Finance subreddit, there is a stickied thread there about how awful H&R Block is. They are only required to have 1 actual CPA per office.
I tried out TaxAct, which is only $40, but it wasn't asking enough questions that I needed to be asked and it was hard to navigate.
Ultimately, I did TurboTax Pro and came out fine. I paid $1200 less than I expected to pay.
