Never played competitively, but I'm thinking about some small local tourneys this year. Any advice?

Practice, especially from 100 yards in.

Thanks. This is what my pro, who played D 1 golf says. "The difference between the Adams tour players and the PGA tour players is how they putt and hit their wedges."

The difference in winning and losing is almost never in how many birdies you make it's how many bogies you don't.
Work on your greenside game. Getting up and down, distance feel on putts over 30 feet, 100 or so 5 foot putts a day. Hit those 5 footers in practice till you're making 99 of them.
Don't shoot at every flag either. Sometimes it's better to try to 2 putt from 30 feet even if you do have a wedge in your hand from the fairway.
The guy who makes 2 birdies and 16 pars will win a lot of local tourneys.

Great stuff, thanks! I can begin the putting now, that's convenient.
I had a 6 footer on the 18th hole on my best scoring round last year. Lost all focus and 3 putted.

Play with large groups of people so you get accustomed to having people watch you.
No more foot wedges in practice rounds.
Find out the courses that tournaments will be played on and play your casual rounds at those courses.

Play the hole backwards.
Any jerkoff can hit it 300 yards, but you may not want your 140 yd club in your hands for a 2nd shot. You may be better with your 160-170 club.

I focus equally on the 120-70 yd shots and the short game. Getting it close from there means easy pars and birdie chances (GIRs). I also work on multiple shot types from the same distance from 50 yds in. You need a different shot if you have a ton of green to work with or a tucked, short pin.

Yea. Play in as many as you can.
You will BOMB the first couple, but they get better after that. Makes regular golf seem way easier.

I quit playing tournament golf after a blew out a disc, and got old.
I make my son in law sick when I have a 4-5 footer most of the time I just stroll up and bat it in. Only time I really settle in on one is when it's outside the hole break.
He spends a few min on the practice green. I spend 15 minimum. Makes a difference.

Play money games during casual rounds. Bet enough so you would actually care if you lost. It will get you accustomed to playing with something on the line. That is the biggest difference between casual and tournament golf.
