Anybody in the Tampa/Sarasota area know how long the red tide will last at the beaches over there? This is my first time hearing about red tide and heard somebody say this is pretty strong and could be there longer than expected. I saw a lot of people are there for spring break but can’t get in the water because of all the dead fish and bad smell. I heard it also affects your breathing if you have respiratory problems and burns your eyes. I wanted to take my family to Siesta Key at the end of May on our Florida vacation but don’t know how long red tide will be around for.

First hand experience, I can tell you that it happens monthly.

I’d avoid the area a full week prior to the occurrence as well, as the violence of the swells can be completely unpredictable.

They usually last between 2 and 7 days.

This current go round is going on about 2 weeks now. A couple years ago there was a bad stretch where it lasted several weeks. That was in late summer or early fall if I remember. I cannot imagine this one lasting from now through May. I guess a new unrelated batch could form then, but I wouldn’t cancel a trip based on that outside chance. Maybe try to keep your plans as flexible as possible, if the red tide maps are showing a presence shortly before your trip you can have a backup plan, maybe over to the Atlantic coast or something.

We've had red tide down here for well over a month and it's not getting better. We need some strong storms or a serious easterly wind to blow for a few days. I mean a wind from the east which doesn't happen often.

This map is from last week. There should be an update to the site later today.

Going on 2 1/2 - 3 years. Due to runoff somewhere in the bay near Tampa. Current brings it south. You can probably count on it being around in May.

In laws are here from Venice... just South of Sarasota. We were just talking about this a few days ago. Lots of fish and a few dolphin washing up on the beach down there.

We don't plan trips around it and go down 2-3 times a year anyway. If the red tide is bad then we head down to Boca Grande for beach & fishing. Never had an issue there even when it is bad around Sarasota/Venice.

Good to see actual responses from people over 25 yrs old.

Went to Florida in 2021 and just missed this north of Naples but some businesses were closed because the week leading up was bad. It's just a risk and it sucks. Heard you couldnt step on the beach then without coughing.

I just read an article yesterday that said there was a glob of seaweed twice the width of the United States heading for the gulf coast that will probably cause some issues but I don't know if Tampa was in its path. I don't have a link but if I see it again I'll edit and add it

Just found it

I just read an article that’s saying it will be worse year for grass ever. Sargassum I think? I looking to go somewhere else this year.

I just watched a report on the sargassum. The Caribbean and Gulf Coast are going to be a nightmare with it this summer.

The red tide has been there all season long on the west coast. The 5k mile long of sargassum bloom (algae) isn’t here yet but there’s gonna be a lot of it this summer. It’s gross and it smells.
