I took Spanish in high school and one semester in college but 5 years later I've forgotten most even though I guess I remember the basics. I live in an area with a lot of Spanish speakers and have been thinking recently of trying to learn it where I could hold a basic conversation or at least understand if they're talking shite about me thinking I can't understand.

Any good free stuff online to learn? Really don't want to pay for Rosetta Stone or classes. Also is it reasonable without putting a ton of time into studying for it? I have enough studying to do as it is.

I learned to speak German. Not that hard. Just studied some vocabulary and read a lot. Oh, and moved there to live for half a year.

Yes, rosetta stone is available for torrent

I tried to learn Arabic several years ago when I was dating a guy from Morocco. It was too difficult and I gave up

No.

I took Spanish in high school and college and forgot most. A few trips to Costa Rica and now I can sort of function at an idiot level. There is no substitute for immersion.

I used Rosetta Stone to refresh my espanol and I thought it was pretty good. Then I tried to use it to learn Russian, it did not work well.

I've done the first few lessons on duolingo. Does it change the structure at all or is just the same thing for like 100 lessons?

The good thing about Spanish is there's so much out there that you can use. If you live anywhere that has Spanish-language gossip tabloids, those are a good way to practice (because they're written at the same intellectual level as our tabloids so they're understandable with just a little bit of Spanish.) You can also read Spanish Wikipedia pages on subjects you know very well. That way, your knowledge of the subject can help you figure out unfamiliar words.

If you know the Bible or even certain passages well, Spanish-language Bibles are readily available online. You can go to Univision's website and view news stories or watch sporting events and listen to the announcer. Baseball would be especially good for that due to the slow action.

But Arabic was his native tongue.

This is true. My bf said his English was way too proper until he moved to the US.

And my cousin who teaches Spanish spent a year in Honduras to really learn the language before teaching it

I did Rosetta Stone for about 3 weeks in college. It was pretty good. I actually learned more than I thought I would in those 3 weeks and have retained some of the basic vocal words I went over. However, school started and picked up pretty quickly and I didn't have time for it anymore. They ran like a 3 months or get your money back promotion, I was broke, and the rest is history...
