Does it really noticably drop the humidity in your house?

Not for the whole house. For the room yes. I have on for the basement that I set to 50% humidity. Has a pump that empties the tank into the shower so I don't have to empty

My A/C dehumidifies my place fortunately. You should get one. They are great for Nola summers.

As pointed out, an AC is a dehumidifier. You can get a smaller dehumidifier. I have one that works for about 1000 sq ft. It works great. It warms up the temperature, especially in warm months. Most have a bucket (which is obviously a pain) or you can run a hose to outside for the condensation build up. Most have a connector that connects to a water hose. It can be a pain to to make a way for the hose to get outside.

Some people who use a dehumidifier in a basement drill a hole in the basement floor and allow it to go out that way if there is gravel beneath the basement.

Got one of those small ones. It fills up in 3-4 days but it doesn't feel that different. Makes me feel good to empty it like I'm making a difference, tho.

Just purchased a 50 pint and it does make a huge difference. Grand kids constantly opening the door to cone in or out. Was running my thermostat on 70 and humidity was staying above 55%. House was cold but clammy.

Now I keep thermostat on 73-75 and the dehumidifier on 50%. Inside humidity is now around 45-47%. Much much more confortable. Removing 2 gallons per day.

We have a small one we put in the kids room when they're sick. Don't use it often enough to tell how good it works.

Yes, for our sailboat when she was on Pontchartrain. Without it, everything in the boat got musty and leather boat shoes could be destroyed by mold in three or four months.
With it running, the musty smell was gone and leather shoes were wearable year round.
We set it up so the collected humidity drained into the galley sink which emptied into the Lake.

I have had a few smaller ones that worked exceptionally well in a single room or two. never had one that would noticeably affect the whole house though. while I do find them to make the room much more comfortable, they have a compressor that cycles on and off like a window unit, so they can be noisy.

they are also energy hogs...they are basically a refrigerator coil followed immediately by a heater coil in the same appliance, so by their nature, they work against themselves.

the best way I have found to keep a house comfortable without a dehumidifier is to tirelessly work to seal every single air leak to the outside and every leak in your air ductwork in the attic. air leaking out of your ductwork into the attic space causes outside air to be sucked into your living space. couple a tight house with an air conditioner that is not oversized and you should be able to keep the humidity at a reasonable level.

We have a Lennox with the Humiditrol dehumidification system. It is different from standard dehumidification products that use cooling to remove moisture. Thought it was bullshite when we it system in but we love it. With thermostat on 73 it feels colder without humidity. Doesn't make sense, I know. I never have figured it out since we out it a few years ago.

If you're sick you probably use a humidifier.
