I tried that once when I was kid. It fell over, rolled off the table and broke.

I did last year, in August. It's the shape of the egg that makes this work, not the Spring Equinox

Salt (or sand), which is available on most days of the year, including the vernal equinox, will make this successful with almost every egg.
