My family is kicking around the idea of going to the Caribbean somewhere this December and the idea of Aruba was brought up. Anybody ever been to Aruba and if so is it worth it? I'll hang up and listen.

Edited the post. I meant to say has anyone been to Aruba, but I will take suggestions on other options to go to this winter.

Yes. It was a neat place. Went about 20 years ago and it was not very developed in terms of attractions, but we still had a good time. I understand there is a more expansive entertainment district now. Would love to go back.

Not worth it. The island is 24 miles long, 6 miles wide. It can be seen in less than a day. There is no underground plumbing, so sometimes cold water is impossible to get out of the tap or shower. When you get sunburned and all you have is hot water, it's not a great situation. The island is a desert and covered in Iguanas. Do not let you wife wear red nail polish or the lizards will think her toes are cherries and try to eat them. Caves are cool but full of bats and bat shite will get all over you. Sharks everywhere so be careful of the water. The currents are also pretty strong in a lot of places around the island.

good luck spending at least part of your trip trying not to die

It was ok for a short trip but I don't think I would want to spend more than 2 or 3 days there. I would suggest the US/BVIs. You can jump from island to island relatively easy.

Was there for one day on a cruise, walked around town. Nice place. Could see the nice hotels off in the distance. Would go back.

I lived there for a year back when Coastal was running the plant there.

Aruba is a great island as far as the locals. However, like already said, it's a desert. I personally love the place (but I know lots of people there).

It's not near as dangerous as some are making it out to be. Yes, a couple of people have died there in the past. The biggest was actually killed by someone who isn't from there. Others have mentioned Punta Cana, just compare the murder rates .

In all honesty though, without really knowing the ins and outs of the island, there are many better places to go.
