Ever had any coverage problems in Louisiana? They used to have a big bald spot in SW LA where I'm at in their coverage map, it seems to be gone now.

No, but I just switched to Verizon from AT&T and now SMS messages are being split up into 2-3 separate messages. I've never had that happen before

Is AT&T still down? One family member still can't make calls in areas that flooded, but can in BR. Another can't make calls anywhere. I don't want to tell them to go to AT&T if it is still down for everyone.

Friends dont let friends and family stay with AT&T.

If you truly care about someone you will urge them to switch to Verizon.

I have T-Mobile, which never had any issues during or after the storm, but all my AT&T peeps had nonexistent service during and a few days after the storm and it's still pretty spotty.

Probably a tower issue with AT&T in that case. AT&T used bandaids during Gustav and refused to address the infrastructure.

Gutting house should be priority #1a and #1b should be cancelling AT&T and switching to Verizon.

I agree, but I understand not wanting to switch to $100+ per month when you've lost everything. Both are older folks whose phones are paid off, so they pay $50 per month with AT&T. It is my understanding that you can't use AT&T phones with Verizon service. Is this true?

Some have mentioned that in threads and it appears to be true.

Verizon is offering folks $650 to switch from AT&T so it helps defray the cost a little bit.

Switching your cell phone service between carriers can be tricky enough. When you throw all the different phones in the mix, things get even harrier. This is doubly true of Apple's iPhone line, with multiple devices that run on any number of non-compatible networks. Whatever your reason for switching from AT&T to Verizon, bringing your phone with you will very likely not be an option. This means your carrier switch will come with a new phone -- whether you want one or not.

The FCC's Local Number Portability guidelines mean that, so long as you're keeping within the same geographic area, your number should be easy to bring from AT&T to Verizon. When you're ready to make the switch, make sure you have your billing address and any account passwords for verification. If the number is in your name and credit, make sure you have your full SSN as well. If it under a business, the tax ID should suffice.

CDMA vs. GSM
CDMA, the network Verizon phones primarily used prior to the launch of 4G service, is incompatible with AT&T's GSM equivalent. This is why cell phones made for, say, Sprint (who also used CDMA) may work on Verizon's towers, while T-Mobile devices (which use GSM) will not. This can cause a lot of confusion when porting -- as well as extra cost, if the person switching isn't clear on the difference prior to moving.

iPhones and Networks
The iPhone 5, Apple's latest offering, is designed to work on LTE (4G) networks. While this means the phones will theoretically work across the carriers if the latest network technology is available, 4G isn't available everywhere. Even if you could get your AT&T iPhone 5 working on Verizon, the difference in networks would guarantee the phone would work only in 4G areas -- and in the business world, limiting your coverage is never a good idea.

Mitigating Costs
If you're dead set on Verizon but don't like the idea of buying a new phone, consider selling your old AT&T iPhone through an online service like Craigslist or eBay. Users will pay good money -- often more than the subsidized cost of a new Verizon iPhone -- for a no-contract iPhone, especially if they're in good condition and have all the original packaging. Just make sure to wipe all your personal data from the phone before selling.

My iPhone 6s can be switched once unlocked.

The 650 verizon is offering is kind of a farce as well. I paid out of pocket to get out of my att contract and am glad to almost be rid of them.

Edit to add, that blurb you cut and pasted is probably from 2014 it states the iPhone 5 is the latest offering.

Whats the deal with the $650? I've been seeing it advertised a lot but haven't read the fine print.

Deal with the $650

they will give you up to 350 dollars to buy out of your att contract, then up to 300 to trade in your existing phone. You only get the 350 part for your contract if you trade in your phone.

In our case we both had the newest 64 gb iPhone 6s. So I would have been selling it to them for 300 each then buying the exact same phone back for 749 each, plus covering the difference of their 300 to each of us to get out of our contracts. I kept asking the woman at the store how this made sense and she kept trying to focus on the fact that the 749 would be a monthly payment not an upfront cost.

I guess this deal is good for people that don't have the ability to just pay off att themselves.

In our case it was roughly 730 dollars to get out of att, then keep our phones. Taking the 650 deal from them we would have spent about 1900.

Verizon?
I live around New Orleans and I drive to Morgan city and BR every now and then. And I've never had any issues with Verizon. It's a bit pricy, but you get what you pay for. I've never had issues with their service or customer service.

We have uverse and I dread calling AT&T for customer service. Plus during hurricanes, everyone with AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. is asking me if they can use my phone.

Last hurricane we had was Isaac 4 years ago now. And Verizon never missed a beat during the storm. And I was in a very rural area
