Oddly enough you can play disc golf at night, though it is usually organized by a local club because you need to put chem lights on the baskets. All the major disc manufacturers make a variety of models in glow plastic. Some people play in the day with them because they like the characteristics of the companies glow plastic.

I enjoy it since I suck at real golf. Take the dog, I'm in and out in two hours

I personally prefer frisbee football where I’m exerting energy baw. That’s a real man’s disc sport.

Ultimate is far more physically demanding and you see a lot of crossovers, disc golfers with an Ultimate background usually throw a lot of forehands. While I love Ultimate it is a team sport and requires a group. Disc golf is like golf you can do it alone or in a small group plus in many places you can take your dogs.

I imagine if you actually played "frisbee football" you would call it ultimate like anyone that actually plays it. Though just like calling disc golf frolf or frisbee golf some players may do it as an inside joke like yelling "nice" after someone throws in disc golf.

A buddy of mine is pretty addicted to it. I go out with him from time to time and use his discs to play. It’s a lot less time and money I have to invest than real golf so I’m all for it.

But it's nothing like real golf

The golf courses around here don't appreciate me playing shirtless while tripping on mushrooms. The local disc course, however, is extreme alpine and without supervision. Hell, I can't even play the golf course right now - it's been a super rainy and snow spring, and the shite is still closed. No one will stop me from stomping around with a sixer and a couple of joints on the mountain, though.

Never tried it. Recently on a JRE episode I heard Bert Kreischer talk about it. He has me wanting to try it.

He mentions Ben Askren plays. A few years back I played a tournament where Ben was on my card. Great guy and it was clear watching him throw he was a natural athlete.

Here is a link to the JRE episode.

ETA if someone doesn't know what disc golf really is here is a compilation of some of the best professional performances from 2021.

I think it’s interesting. Been seeing a lot on tiktok lately, which inspired the thread.

Some of these people, who play, take it seriously, I have no hate on the game and I knew my OP would get responses.

I’m really not worried about what others do as long as they are happy in their life.

Been playing close to twenty years and running tournaments eighteen. The tournaments fill up way before the day of play now. You use to do sign ups the morning of the tournament, but there’s too much demand the last couple of years. Paper scorecards are gone and it’s done on phones. You can keep track of any tournament around the world hole by hole.

We have a local guy that makes two hundred thousand a year from his main sponsor. Plus he has other sponsors and winnings. The top few players make over a million from their main disc sponsor a year.

It exploded during COVID. While most of us want to grow the sport most of us were also pissed during COVID because you couldn't find discs, so many models were sold out. Partly due to COVID itself but also due to the huge number of new players.

I proselytize for the sport because it is a great way to spend the day with friends, by yourself, with your dogs (certain courses) and your family.

It is easily accessible. BREC for example has four courses (not sure if they have finished the remodel of Greenwood park in Baker yet). It is almost always free to play though there are pay for play courses. The cost for equipment is low but if you are a gear slut the sky is the limit. If you are the kind of golfer that buys 3 new drivers a year you will LOVE the technical gear side of disc golf.

It is easy to learn to play. I can take a group of people from 7 to 70 to the right course and they will all have a good time on their first round, where golf has that rough early learning curve. Like golf though it takes a lifetime to master and most never do.

There is actually far more organized amateur competitions than real golf and the tournaments accommodate everyone from the novice to the pro.

I take my wife's GF who is in a nursing home for dementia out at least once a week to play. He is in his early 80s and had to give up golf (was a lifetime single digit handicap) due to a left shoulder problem. He absolutely loves it. His demetia is very mild during the day but picking the proper disc, course management and learning the various courses helps keep his mind sharp. He is in excellent shape for his age and has been a life long athlete and really excels for his age. We have set up a remarkably good handicap between he and I and he wins as many rounds with his handicap as I do. The first thing the nurses ask when we return back is "how won?". he is beaming when he gets to say "me" and honestly I love it too because I never back off on him.

I know the game has lots of baggage and it isn't for everyone but I will bet you if you have kids that aren't already hopelessly addicted to screens they will almost all universally love it and the fun per dollar is hard to beat.

DG is exploding nationally and in Baton Rouge

We recently closed BR City Park Golf Course for a one day tournament. It was amazing

I love DG. my crew is good but we don’t take the game too seriously. Drinks and 420 abound.

It’s a great and easy way to enjoy a few hours outside with the boys
