As long as you are not under contract they will do whatever to keep you.

I get it free every year by calling in august and re-upping all my freebies and discounts but you have to be sure to call and cancel in januaray or you will be billed for the following year and they won't usually reverse it once it gets on your bill.

If you want it, call in august every year and re-negotiate, under contract or not. August is when the new packages geared to football come out and they will gladly give you all the new perks to extend you for a year; all the new discounts, packages whatever.

I tried playing that game once. I ended calling and threatening to leave because the bill was so much and asked what they could do for me as far as making the package worth it. The retention operator laughed and suggested that I cut my package down to a cheaper package. I canceled my service that day. That was over 2 years ago and I still get offers in the mail at least twice a week with special promotions. Getting rid of Directv was one of the best things I have ever done.
