Turned on the heaters in the house today. One worked fine, not sure about the other. The one I am not sure about it kicks on but takes a few minutes before it is really pulling air through the return. When it initially comes on it is barely pulling air through the return. When the other comes on it is pulling air through the return immediately. Any suggestions/ideas?

Change the filter, if that does not help look for a crushed duct/ducts on either discharge or return or possibly some connection came apart on return side.

Many other options but these are the most likely as well as easiest to cure.

I ran it without filter to check that and it did the same thing before I changed the filter.

Also, from return to heater is not flexible duct work, it is a box like a plenum. All of the duct work from the plenum to the vents is all okay, none crushed/bent.

A thought: has the blower been acting up in any other ways lately?

Can you make it spin at high speed by setting the fan switch to "on" at the t-stat?

I've seen blower motors have some damage in the windings that don't allow for appropriate speeds.

Maybe also try putting a fresh capacitor in the blower motor.

Good luck.

I had a similar issue. My CO vacuum valve was stopped up, gas heat, and it was not allowing the blower to engage.

It seems the one in question does not blow as hard as the other unit.

First question is did you notice reduced flow when set on cool? Same blowers... Check on cool again and see if there is a difference

Cool is blowing strong and sucking air through the return right from the start.

Are they the same age and/or same model? Newer heaters will take a couple of minutes to warm up before the blower kicks on so that the blower doesn't start blowing cold air at the start.

Looks like it might not be so hard to stop a Trane after all.

now, that is pretty damn puzzling...you would think the air handler components of the system would work the same way regardless....
