Easy way to deal with this, backup to cloud before you go to the airport or border. Factory wipe. Restore once you make it through.

Or be a white american not acting like a douchebag, and the likelihood of them "randomly" selecting you to search whatever drops to about 1%.

you could have quit a long time ago.

tell me again how posting my personal information (that i don't keep on my phone) is equal to some border patrol agent glancing through my texts.

i'll hang up and listen.

border patrol doesn't seek out people that haven't crossed the border

For a person who claims not take me seriously you do give me a lot of attention.

Because they could easily accuse you of hiding information that normal people have on their phone. If you hand them a blank burner phone they will know you're hiding something from them. You don't think they will ask more questions if you do that?

Would you lie and say you don't have a Facebook account or a bank account?

Not sure if intentional or not, but you're completely ignoring or missing the point of my question, regarding YOUR reasoning for why it's ok with you.

This is simply wrong.

Google border checkpoint inside the US. They have authority within 100 miles of the border, and not just land borders- sea borders as well. 2/3 of the US live in this zone.

It is clear that this is a classic case of technology outrunning legislative / constitutional law.

Eh, not really. Part of the probable cause FOR Customs and Borders to search electronic devices are the technology import/export laws. Some of our common everyday stuff like phones, PC's, tablets, and the SOFTWARE on them are specifically forbidden from being exported outside the USA.

Heck, the old WebTV from MicroSoft was banned from export, may even still be. It was limited to pretty much Continental USA only. Some of the US Territories and stuff in the Pacific could not legally import/export those crappy units. Kinda ironic since they were made by Sony overseas.

So, Customs and Borders does have the "right" to search for export banned software/hardware.

They just had the WikiLeaks posting of highly classified CIA info. That was illegal data/software exported from this nation. They missed searching someone's technology obviously.

quote:

BUT HERE IS THE RUB. The libs decrying this searching of cell phones were fricking silent for 8 years while their party ran the country. But three months of Trump and they are screaming about cell phone searches. Show me how many of these searches occurred under the previous administration and then we can talk.

Agree. The quoted story states 4900 searches of cell phones, etc. in January. POTUS Trump was sworn in on Jan. 20. The story never mentions how many in December 2016. It did state the numbers were increasing throughout 2016 though.

I don't see this as a partisan issue, rather a statist vs small govt one. Our govt hates contraction of any sort.

Or is it to evade customs?

If asked to provide such information for them to inspect I am sure you comply correct?

Are you denying they have jurisdiction to perform temporary checkpoints within 100 miles of the border?

Is it possible to move them?

One big issue is that "at the border" has been continuously re-defined to include more and more.

Its been a 100 mile zone since the 1950's and over 1/2 of all Americans live within 100 miles of a border

As much fun as this has been I have to go shovel snow.

If I may, let me try and sum up your argument- you won't care until it affects you. If you agree then it's settled.
