I stayed at the Victoria house on my honeymoon back in 07.We are planing another trip for our five year anniversary and almost went back to ambergris caye. You review is spot on. We did the day trip with amigos del mar,out to the blue hole and half moon caye that was just incredible. Ate at a restaurant in town that had some of the best seafood fritters I've ever had, also had the best margaritas! I'll have to ask the wife the name of the restaurant because the Belikin beer clouded my memory a lil bit.

That place has changed so much since we first visited in the mid-70's. There were no motorized vehicles on the island and you had to stay in people's homes because there was no hotel, although one was being built. You went there to scuba dive because there was nothing else to do except snorkel. Nightlife was interesting because there were usually drunk British sailors since it was British Honduras, not independent Belize. You ate meals with the family and it certainly didn't look like the stuff in your pics.

Looks like you had fun. It's kind of sad to see how modern it is though.

Clem Caliz sends a Geaux Tigers to the OT. He sent me a note today, already had 3 "LSU" people contact him to plan a trip this summer. I gave him my LSU hat and he acted like it was bar of gold. It's always nice to be humbled by stuff like that.

We were at Victoria House a couple years ago and had an awesome time. Best restaurant on the island is on site, and they set up any kind of excursion you want.

Taxi to the town was $2 and they had golf carts and bikes that couple be borrowed from the resort/hotel.

As far as safety, I will say that we were warned not to walk the road at night. Not that there is a huge risk, but there have been incidents.

The golf carts ruin the whole experience, not that cars would be better, but the golf carts are worse than BR traffic at times.

Almost every restaurant we are at was excellent. There were a couple that were not up to par, one where you feed tarpon, but the vast majority had crazy good food.

Flying is the only way to go once you get to Belize. We covered half the country in about 10-12days and got to see from "mountains" to deep water.

Great review of Ambergris Caye. I've been multiple times. Estel's is where I usually have my first Belikin of the morning. If you go back there is a blind gentleman the sells homemade tamales on the middle road that are to die for.

As for safety, I've never had an incident where I felt any danger. I love being down there so much so, it is where I'm retiring to.

Just saw your pic of Clem. I fished with him last time I was down there.

Awesome write-up. I'm headed there at the end of May for 10 days to log some dives. Might shoot you an email to get more info. Thanks.
