The change takes effect November 1 and applies to full-time, part-time and temporary workers. Amazon (AMZN) says the $15 minimum wage will benefit more than 250,000 Amazon employees, plus 100,000 seasonal workers.

That's pretty good for a private company to implement that on their own.

Amazon also said its public policy team will begin lobbying for an increase in the federal minimum wage, which has been $7.25 an hour since 2009.

This is not.

Either it won't benefit all of those employees or they have nearly half a million employees making less than that 15 an hour now. What are they going to do about the people who have been there longer that are making 15 an hour already? to make this effective, they basically need to give everyone a 5 an hour raise or percentage to keep everyone happy.

Because it's bad economics

Eventually Amazon will have full automation, those people will be out of a job and competitors who followed suit with a $15 wage will be at a terrible disadvantage.

That's exactly what Amazon is striving for

Maybe, but that isnt a bad thing, either. $15 would increase competition, makingbthe work force progress their skills.

The only thing it would increase is inflation. Not every company is able to cut benefits the way Amazon did when they increased their minimum wage.

Amazon employees are now going to make less per year.

It actually does the opposite. Bump the min. wage to a comfortable wage and those left with jobs would have little reason to increase their skills.

Those left unemployed will just live off the government tit.

Nonsense, obvious nonsense. Really irritating when people argue extreme ridiculous positions to defend their nonsense ideas. A person who is making $15 an hour is obviously making more than someone who is making $10 an hour.

And the "this will bring on automation and eliminate jobs" argument is equally stupid. Amazon is going to automate as many jobs as they can as quickly as they can either way, and then what happens? The people who are now making $20 an hour because they are lower management or whatever become the new bottom of the rung and that will be the new group that you stupidly believe only "deserve" $7.25 an hour, meanwhile they will move onto welfare in companies who pay such low wages.

Or maybe you believe a guy who made $50B last years wasn't going to automate as fast as he could but now that wages for a few thousand people have went up $3 an hour per person he for sure is.

Amazing huh?

Nope, my friend is a manager, he goes up to 16.50, but loses his monthly bonus checks, and stock options.
This is only a PR move.

Illegal immigration

Is the primary reason low paying jobs are stagnant. The other is the global economy

Not only the illegal variety, but with the H2B programs, foreigners on work visas must work for the company that brought them over or risk deportment and never getting a visa again. Keeps wages low across several industries.

That is where the prime increase went. He isn’t paying them... your extra $20 a year is.
Actually a lot of the wage increases are being paid by Amazon employees that already make close to $15 and up. They are moving away from the incentive-based pay program they have had which included monthly bonuses and stock options. Maybe Amazon has plans to give everyone a raise to offset the hit they will see when their incentive pay goes away but I haven’t read that. If I was an Amazon shareholder I wouldn’t like this at all.

Maybe you should read the terms of the wage increase.
