People planning to attend a rally this weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia featuring white supremacist Richard Spencer were sent scrambling for alternative lodging after Airbnb made it clear it doesn’t want their business.

TheWrap has confirmed that the online lodging service has started deactivating accounts belonging to users it has determined are attending “Unite the Right,” a rally organized by self-described “white activist” Jason Kessler happening Aug. 12. The event will feature several speakers associated with white nationalism, including Spencer, and neo-confederate activist Michael Hill.

“In 2016 we established the Airbnb Community Commitment reflecting our belief that to make good on our mission of belonging, those who are members of the Airbnb community accept people regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or age,” Airbnb shared in a statement. “We asked all members of the Airbnb to affirmatively sign on to this commitment.”

Affected users, and supporters sympathetic to white nationalist causes, took to various social media platforms to complain about the removals, with some even calling for a boycott of the service.

The conservative in me says that sucks, but it's their right to deny service to whomever.

The conservative in me also says that this trend of liberal companies pulling bullshite on their political opponents to score internet points needs to end, but liberals are still children, so it'll never actually stop.

If you were fine with religious bakers denying a gay couple a wedding cake, then you should be fine with this. End of story.

I'm fine with AirBnb getting sued, just as the baker did. Gotta love you liberals.

I guess we'll find out in the fall when the bakery case goes to the SUpreme Court.

I agree, private business should be able to do whatever.

Full bias, I hate racists and I hate what they stand for. I'm glad Airbnb kicked them out. That being said, could you imagine if they pulled this for a black panther rally?

Businesses shouldn't be forced to provide people with a good and/or service outside of very specific situations.

One way of guerilla warfare I could see against AirBNB would be if some busybodies decided to start reporting the illegal sublets to the cities in question to reduce the number of available properties.

Or going full California and deciding to rent and squat at property through the site in states with strong squatters rights such as Cali.

Both are a-hole behaviors but legal to do and target AirBnB properties and users.

Most Airbnb exist in urban areas so this is no surprise that politics dictates their life.

Seems that it'd be tough for Airbnb to discern the "guilty" from the innocent.

Unless the user names of "HtlrwuzRight" & "SendEmBack" were involved.

I guess kudos for a company to put their ethics ahead of profit, probably no one would have noted that some attendees booked their accommodations thru Airbnb.

Completely agree, but the precedent set-forth by those cases say that the government should levy fines against Airbnb until they lose everything and are declaring bankruptcy. Discrimination due to one's beliefs, religion, sex, etc is an infringement of inter-state commerce which according to those cases needs to be dealt with heavy and swift punishments.

Gotta make sure Richard Spencer and his crew are able to sleep at night....

The difference being, bakers are being labeled homophobes, bigots and having their names dragged through the mud by protesters. Even being taken to court.

I doubt anyone is going to be doing this to ABNB

Is this Airbnb's corporate office canceling bookings or is it the owners themselves doing so?
